WWD News: Thakoon Designs Cardigan for Aloha Rag, Minimal Intent: Rozae Nichols and Stella Ishii’s New Line, Off And Running: Alexander Wang

Happy Monday my fellow denimphiles!  

In today’s WWD breaking news, I’m highlighting three designers that I have in my closet: Thakoon, Rozae Nichols and Alexander Wang.  Three very different personalities and aesthetics, but all design gorgeous clothing.

Thakoon designs a cardigan for Aloha Rag’s private label.  Aloha Rag, has been my long time go-to online shop for designers that I love such as Henrik Vibskov, Martin Margiela, Comme des Garcons, Balenciaga, Lanvin and more.  Since they opened their free standing store in NYC, it’s been a nice shopping destination for catching up with what’s hot and in trend.  Lucky New Yorkers will be able to snag Thakoon’s cardigans as the NY store will only carry Thakoon’s cardigan, to drop in February.

Rozae Nichols starts a new collection called Ian with long-time friend Stella Ishii.  I own a few dresses from Rozae Nichols and always love the added little details that she puts on her clothing.  Her clothes are often simple and feminine with a touch of tactile stimuli both to the fingers and the eyes. In Nichols and Ishii’s Ian collection, they go minimal keeping things more basic, but always chic.

Alexander Wang continues his successful career in 2009 with footwear, eyewear (with the fantastic Linda Farrow),  a cheaper line called T and a menswear line.  A great basic dress to have in your closet from his T collection is the Stretch One Shoulder Dress.  Dalexander-wang2ress it up or down, wear it alone or over leggings or jeans.  There are a multiple number of ways you can rock this dress and at only $95, it’s a great buy!

Thakoon Designs Cardigan for Aloha Rag

Aloha Rag??™s new private label is going to include a series of designer collaborations, and first up is a men??™s cardigan by Thakoon, the designer??™s first foray into men??™s wear but surely not his last. 

???I??™m dying to do men??™s wear, I really am,??? said Thakoon Panichgul. ???I think it would be so fun. I always have guys asking me when I??™m going to start. I think maybe in a year. Maybe.??? 

As reported, Tatsugo Yoda??™s Aloha Rag boutiques are launching a private label collection for spring that is available for wholesale as well. But the designer collaborations, which will include women??™s in the future, will be exclusive to Aloha Rag stores, located in New York and Honolulu. Only the New York unit will carry the Thakoon cardigan, arriving in February. 

???I love seeing designers create pieces that are outside of their comfort zone. At the end of the day, they are artists and my boutique is their gallery,??? said Yoda.

Minimal Intent: Rozae Nichols and Stella Ishii’s New Line

Two years ago, Stella Ishii visited the Dia:Beacon art museum in upstate New York with a close friend, designer Rozae Nichols. ???We saw [the work of] this conceptual artist Fred Sandback,??? recalls Ishii, president and founder of The News Inc., a downtown Manhattan showroom for young designers. ???There??™s a beautiful piece there where he defines space with thread.??? Something about those string sculptures, set against a spare, white-walled room, ultimately stuck. 

Fast-forward to spring 2010. Sandback has become the unlikely first muse behind a new contemporary collection launched by Ishii and Nichols, dubbed Ian. Look closely at the simple shirts and sheath dresses, for instance; there are subtle, stray lines tracing from front to back and side to side, reminiscent of Sandback??™s work. ???The world of conceptual and minimalist art is a really strong comfort zone for me,??? explains Nichols. ???It will continue to be a strong point of reference for the collection.??? 

rozae-nichols2Contemporary art also lies at the root of the co-founders??™ relationship. Ishii is married to an artist; Nichols, to an art director. The two were introduced nearly two decades ago by Los Angeles gallerist Marc Foxx. ???[Foxx] wanted me to see [Ishii??™s husband??™s] work,??? says the Los Angeles-based Nichols. ???I got a [mixed media piece] of his that day. We have been friends as two couples, sharing a dialogue of all the things we love in art and architecture, for all these years.???

Off And Running: Alexander Wang


alexander-wangAlexander Wang is ???super psyched.??? It??™s early October in Paris and Wang, on a phone interview as he navigates his way through the city??™s winding streets, is talking about attending his first fashion shows in Europe. First up is Valentino, less than three hours away. Tomorrow comes the juggernaut, especially for this longtime Marc Jacobs fan and former intern: Louis Vuitton at the Louvre courtyard. ???I can??™t believe I??™m able to go,??? enthuses Wang, 25. ???I feel like I??™m a student sneaking into his show.???

 A decade ago, that very well might have been the case. Growing up, Wang was the clich?© fashion hound??”waiting by the mailbox after school for his fashion glossies to arrive, eagerly following his mom on shopping excursions and, once the Internet hit, obsessively following the collections online. Wang was so enamored with the industry, its bold-faced movers, models and shakers, that the San Francisco native used to scour eBay for tickets to the CFDA and VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, too.

Plenty has changed. Wang heads his own self-financed $20 million firm and, in five short years, has positioned himself as one of the more visible movers and shakers of fashion??™s next generation. His name already spawns off its own adjectives and nouns??”???A wangster,??? writes Dublin-based blogger Ana K., ???is a skinny urban girl who lives each day according to the gospel according to Alexander Wang?????”and the early ???Model-Off-Duty??? catchphrase of his, once used to describe Wang??™s signature easy, nonchalant look, is common industry lingo now.

And 2009 has become a year of major progress. Wang launched footwear, eyewear (with Linda Farrow), an e-commerce site, a secondary line called T and his first formal entr?©e into men??™s wear within that. He??™s making inroads internationally, too: Wang recently was named the hottest international designer brand in a survey by Japanese newspaper Senken-Shimbun??”double the votes of runner-up Givenchy??”and just introduced his own in-store shop at Selfridges in London. Also, Wang, in his second nomination, nabbed this year??™s CFDA Swarovski Award for emerging women??™s wear designer.
