[BLANKNYC] Gets Back to Basic for Spring 2011

We love the [BLANKNYC] spring 2011 lookbook—it’s straight forward, functional, and chic. The flirty short-shorts with contrast flap pockets and saturated blue match-everything skinny jeans are flawless spring wardrobe staples. Stylish accents like loose-fit high-waisted fire engine red lounge pants and cropped/cuffed dark wash jeans make for edgy picks in the evening. Each look could be punctuated with a pair of converse or a serious pair of heels. Everyone from the L.L. Bean lovers to the Diesel-addicts should find something they adore in this collection, and we can’t wait to rock it ourselves!

The Runway Gets Cheap: Cheap Monday S/S 2011

Hip, modern, edgy, and–in their terms–minimal, Cheap Monday has given us a collection that definitely revs us up for the Spring and Summer season, and they’ve done it in a way that only they could pull off.  From the risqu?, sheer, mid-drift tops, to the diversely distressed and delectably embellished denim, this collection has everything essential for the button-pusher and so-not-cheap style enthusiast in all of us.

Denim fits ranged from a more tapered boyfriend jean, to the still strong skinny— taggings and studs absolutely not optional.

Siwy Denim S/S 2011 LookBook

I know Fall is just getting underway, but who is ready for some fun in the sun already?  Trust me, by the end of all these L.A. Fashion Week events I’ve attended I certainly am!  And no designer has enticed me to fly to some part of the world where it’s technically currently summer more than Michelle Siwy. During the presentation of her new collection last week I received a copy of the new S/S 2011 LookBook and–well, I’ll just let the images speak for themselves, but, trust me,  you’ll wish it was summer too!

Photographer: Emir Erlap; Hair: Conrad Dornan; Make Up: Tracy Alfajora; Models: J.P. and Zen, IMG Models

Enticing,  right? One things for sure, your summer will not be complete without a pair of Siwy denim cut-off shorts. And can we talk about those amazing wide-leg jeans? I know I’ve said it before, but if there’s one thing that is a must-have for Spring and Summer its a pair of wide-leg jeans–you might as well just make them a pair of Siwys!

Are you loving Siwy Denim?  Want to know more?  Stay tuned for an inside look into the mind behind the brand, Michelle Siwy herself! And if you missed it, be sure to take a look at my coverage of the Siwy Denim S/S 2011 launch party!

Charlotte Ronson Brings Back The 90s

With so many designers paying homage to the seventies for fall and spring, I have to say it was a big breathe of fresh air to see Charlotte Ronson’s tribute to the nineties. No,  I’m not talking 90210 nineties, think more Claire Danes in “My So-Called Life” nineties. Cue the ditsy florals, and plaid!

Now before you cringe let me affirm that if grunge could ever be done in a pretty, feminine, and even romantic way Ronsons’ way is it!   She showed us the expected nineties staples such as Slouchy sweaters, plaid shirts (tied around the waist, of course), long flowy dresses with floral patterns, loose beanies and scrunched-down socks while modernizing it with tops in  sheer fabrics and–somehow–a more clean though very nineties grunge stylistic approach.  Each model had long, flowing locks, stringy little braids and nose-rings! Is this bringing back any memories yet?

But wait a second! Grunge–and the nineties for that matter–would have been nothing without denim. Though Ronsons’ collection wasn’t  too denim heavy as far as fabric goes she did utilized a lot of  fresh denim blue hues throughout the collection. And when it came down to it, the denim pieces she did incorporate were just right!  I mean, you can’t have grunge without a denim vest! And what would the nineties have been without overalls, or in this case an overall-esque, ankle length denim dress. Like I said:  just right!

All-in-all Ronson took the best of a decade know for its free and chaotic spirit and managed to produce a collection with the perfect balance between edgy and soft, grungy and (get this) romantic,  and most definitely nostalgic but oh so modern.

Fall into Spring and Summer With Diesel Black Gold

It seems that Diesel Black Gold may be forecasting a rather cold spring and summer season.  From leather blazers and pants, bomber jackets, bundled up scarves, and layered knits in a typically fall palette of cognacs, caramels, dusty tans and grays; the only thing really keeping this collection from screaming fall are the strappy leather sandals and thigh-high shorts. By the way, did I mention there was no swimwear in sight?

Now, I have to admit that the collection as a whole is a breathe of fresh air for the brand, and it definitely is a more sophisticated route. However, creative director Sophia Kokosalaki might as well have gotten rid of the ‘Diesel’ in Diesel Black Gold.

From the time Diesel was founded in the late 70s, through its successful crossover into the high-end category in the 90s, to present day, the emphasis of the brand has always been denim based with great distressed detailing.  Flash-forward into S/S 2011 and shades of dark, dusty colors have displaced indigo blues, and the usual frayed edges and signature deconstructed look are subbed with fades and a more worn in look. As for men, the silhouette is slimmer than ever.

Of course fashion is always about looking forward and it’s ever-changing, and in fact since the beginning, Diesel turned their backs on the style-dictators and consumer forecasters of the fashion establishment and let their own tastes lead them. So, in reality such a radical departure–even though we love their denim–shouldn’t come as a shock.

So, even with fall just kicking off, are you ready to fall into spring and summer?
