Clothing label Babakul picked models that remind us of Jane Birkin and her It Girl daughter, Lou Doillon, for their Spring-Summer 2012 range of Hippie jeans, and we do mean 70s fashion redux. After all, Babakul is a French translation for “hippie.” This consistent collection of classic denim silhouettes—featuring flared wide leg jeans in high waists, soft denim shorts and a flirty denim dress—are sure to be great music festival fashion staples. We suddenly wanted to put on some Serge Gainsbourg and fiddle around with an acoustic guitar (even if we can’t play one). Babakul is simply killing us with their tranquil, laid-back styling, a product of the Los Angeles-based company founded by denim industry veterans who have together founded True Religion and Taverniti jeans.

There was a time when you wouldn’t dream of spending an entire afternoon in a pair of jeans for the strenuous task of holiday shopping. Now we have comfortable stretch-denim blend jeans (and we don’t actually need to leave the computer to get our holiday gifts bought). My how times have changed! Gwen Stefani was spotted doing a little holiday spotted in Paige Denim Verdugo Ultra Skinny. She paired the comfortable jeans with a big scarf, tailored jacket, and retro sunglasses, looking ready to jump from a day shopping for ornaments to a night out in London.

When the temperatures rise and the same old denim shorts aren’t doing it for you, consider a fun girlie retro look: the bloomers. Fashioned for grown ups in a leaner look (versus a baggy, tiered ruffle diaper look), the elasticized leg opening shields your skivvies from the elements while allowing you to show optimum leg. Denim bloomer shorts are hard to find at the moment (though there is a cute pair by House of Cassette online at 80s Purple), but you can count on Etsy to bring you vintage styles just when you need them!
Both denim bloomer shorts are upcycled denim, so you can feel good about the purchase (plus they’re only $25 to $27 each!). We think a loose, cap sleeve blouse or frilly white tank top and wedge espadrilles would look swimmingly with these denim shorts. To check out these bloomers, go to Etsy to shop!

Noticing a trend here? Instead of couture gowns, we are seeing a lot of celebrities like Diane Kruger, gracing the covers of magazines in denim fashion. For Glamour Magazine‘s March 2011 issue, readers are treated to a buffet of denim looks from J Brand, Diesel, Balmain and other brands. We are loving the all-American and retro-centric Rockabilly chic looks, done tastefully in American flag themes and made complete by a carefully coiffed 1940s hairstyle with hard edged streetwear looks.
A former model herself, Diane certainly hasn’t lost her touch vamping and posturing for Glamour. She is also interviewed saying, “I truly, genuinely like clothes. Making them is an art form, and wearing them is a form of self-expression.” Read Diane’s full interview in Glamour Magazine, where she talks about her own style sensibility, boyfriend Joshua Jackson (TV’s “The Fringe”) and her latest movie,”Unknown” with Liam Neeson. Check out some of our favorite looks from Diane’s Glamour photo shoot!
