A Gift For Your Guy: The Indigo “Boro” Tie From Mister Freedom

These indigo “Boro” ties from Mister Freedom are the perfect gift to get for your guy this holiday season. They’re made from an assortment of fabrics so they’re easy to match with the rest of your wardrobe. We love how the colors are broken up by either bursts of red or a print, so even if the rest of your outfit is monotone, these ties will spice it up. What makes this tie a really cool gift though is that they are all handmade in their LA studio, so no two are alike. Make your guy will feel extra special and get this very limited, one-of-a-kind gift by emailing john or jordan

Live Life Love Denim: The Denim Brand That Is True To Its Name

We’ve caught a glimpse of the new brand Live Life Love Denim, and well frankly, we wouldn’t mind living in their denim because we really do love it! While the brand is based out of Los Angeles, every jean is made from premium Japanese denim, so you know that you’re getting top quality. Though the line is due out this fall, we do see a nod to the pastel denim trend of summer, and to keep up with the seasons there are also hot coated denim skinny jeans, in both olive and red. If you really want to make a statement, the white & blue tie-dye wash is the pair of jeans for you. As denim brands keep pushing their limits to stay on top of the market, we think this new brand knows exactly what they’re doing, and we like it!

Raven Denim at Project Global Trade Show

On day 2 of our PROJECT Global Trade Show coverage we got to chat with Helen Soulmiotis, senior account executive of Raven Denim. Loved by many-a-celebrity (the aptly named bootylicious Megan Fox short is a clear indiction of how much she loves the brand), the LA-based Raven is definitely one to watch. As a complement to their already popular women’s line, the brand is launching a men’s line. We absolutely fell in love with the Max trouser (most popular piece in their men’s line), which adds a relaxed twist to the classic trouser. All of the denim is imported from Italy and Japan and comes in washes that compliment any wardrobe. From high waisted that don’t make you look like a mom, to indigo rinsed trousers that elongate the leg, Raven denim is definitely something we’re raving about (yes, pun intended).

An Exclusive Q&A with Gridlock Denim

There is a denim revolution happening right now. The new Los Angeles-based women’s denim line, Gridlock, offers an innovative way of personalizing your style in a matter of seconds. They boast removable back pocket jeans that can change your whole look in a matter of zips & snaps! Gridlock denim jeans include more than 20 pocket designs to showcase every season from leather dye cuts pockets to a variety of custom skins (you can collect them all). We had the chance to interview the designer and hear it all firsthand.

Denim Therapy: Lets start from the beginning.  How did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Gridlock Denim: I always had a passion for design and creation. When I was in high school I used to design my own shoes and bags. So later on when I worked for Diesel and Replay in NY I was really inspired with denim. When I moved back to LA and had started a Company manufacturing Men’s Undergarments and Lingerie for 5 years. I thought it was time to start a new venture that had my personal touch. After bouncing ideas back and fourth the idea of changing your pockets with different designs came about. At that time pocket designs were everything. After registering the Patented idea Worldwide I then started with the whole collection. Including picking a unique name that was unisex.

DT: Are there other denim brands you consider your immediate competition? How do you differentiate yourself from the hundreds of popular denim brands afloat right now?
GD: I don’t consider any Brands a competition b/c no other Brand out of 100 Brands has my concept. I differentiate my brand with being able to be a classy jean and when my customer wants to change up the pockets they can. It’s like having a couple pair of jeans.

DT: Do you have any pre-designing rituals?
GD: One of my rituals is going on the style blogs and the other is heading to Coffee shops, bars, walking the streets and seeing what denim different people are wearing. I also like to travel out of LA and get inspired by different cities and cultures.

DT: Describe the person who represents your ideal target customer the customer you have in mind when you’re planning a collection.
GD: The Customer in mind is a woman/man that is age 21-35 that’s either in School or has a 9-5 job and likes to change his/her denim when they are out and about.

DT: Can you give us hint about what’s next?
GD: Spring Collection is out you can view it on as for my “Fall Collection” this will have darker washes of denim with unique details. I will be also coming out with a series of Cigarette Corduroys in Bordeaux, Army Green, Black, and Grey. We will also be introducing the Gridlock 100 Edition Collection without our Patented Pocket Overlays.

DT: What would be your dream collaboration? Any plans of that in the future?
GD: My dream collaboration would be with Diesel Jeans or Replay, or an amazing musician ie: Will i am, Lady Gaga, RHCP, Kanye West.

DT: What are the most popular washes/fits in the line? What are your favorites, and how would you style them?
GD: My favorite washes so far are the Marina, Railroad, and “I-core vintage”. My personal favorite is the Cigarette cut in marina or i-core vintage. I would wear the cigarette jeans in Railroad with my Statue of Liberty pocket overlays, Black Heels, Tan low cut v neck Henley, and a Scarf. For the 2nd Style I would wear the straight leg in i-core vintage with my gun metal studded pocket, black boots, and a black low cut v-neck.

DT: Do you have any favorite/least favorite denim trends right now?
GD: Let’s start with my least favorite jeans now. It’s a jean with too many details all over the jean. My favorite denim trends that are back are the Skinny Flare. Takes me back to high school and is a good change from the cigarette’s being the Trend.

DT: Street style and style blogs are huge in the industry right now as a source of inspiration, influencing the high end labels rather than vice versa. How much does street style influence your designing?
GD: Being that I grew up around street style I am very influenced by it. It definitely plays a part in my design and I really am happy that it has inspired high-end labels as well.

DT: How many pairs of denim do YOU own?
GD: I used to own about a 100 Pairs of denim. I cleaned my closet out and only wear Gridlock now.

An Exclusive Q and A with Denim Of Virtue

Denim of Virtue is a Los Angeles-based premium denim company inspired by the glamour of L.A. and the big city lifestyle, grounded on the principle that all good things can be attained through virtuous means. Every step, from the initial sketch to the final stitch, is created right here in the heart of Los Angeles. You may remember our enthusiasm when we wrote up the denim overall shorts review—and you’re about to understand why!

Denim Therapy: Lets start from the beginning.  How did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Denim Of Virtue: I don’t really remember the exact moment but definitely I knew I didn’t want to be anything else from the beginning.  My mom was a designer and I wanted to be just like her.  I grew to love denim and Denim of Virtue because of the people I work with.

DT: Are there other denim brands you consider your immediate competition? How do you differentiate yourself from the hundreds of popular denim brands afloat right now?
DOV: I would say Jimmy Taverniti is my immediate competition.  Every DOV piece is put together by sewing experts one by one and we don’t make too much of one style.  I concentrate on the quality of the fabric and of course the fit. We also use double threading for durability and every piece that gets shipped is checked thoroughly for quality.  We would rather ship short than have even one damaged piece on the floor.

DT: Do you have any pre-designing rituals?
DOV: We like to clean our desks, rearrange desks, and anything related to that before we start a new season.

DT: Describe the person who represents your ideal target customer- you have in mind when you’re planning a collection.
DOV: Working professional or student of any age who loves to shop and appreciates fashion and looking good.

DT: Can you give us hint about what’s next for (following or upcoming season– Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter)?
DOV: Spring/Summer 2012 will have some changes in the pockets for a fresh new look.

DT: What would be your dream collaboration? Any plans of that in the future?
DOV: I would love to collaborate with Frankie Morello.  Every piece is an artwork.  If I had a chance to meet him,of course.

DT: What are the most popular washes/fits in the line? What are your favorites, and how would you style them?
DOV: Our most popular style is our “Patience.”  Our skinnys, bootcuts, and flares in the “Patience” style are all pretty much a great seller.  However, my favorite is the ankle skimmers.  I would style it with a pair of booties and a loose shirt with tight sleeves.

DT: Do you have any favorite/least favorite denim trends right now?
DOV: My favorite is the dark washes.  It just looks good with everything.  My least favorite is the acid wash and the tie dye.

DT: Street style and style blogs are huge in the industry right now as a source of inspiration, influencing the high end labels rather than vice versa. How much does street style influence your designing?
DOV: 50% street style, 50% couture

DT: How many pairs of denim do YOU own?
DOV: Lost count, I need a separate closet for them.

DT: Favorite celeb wearing your brand?
DOV: Kristen Stewart

Levi’s Curve ID: One Step Closer to a Perfect Fit

We love how far Levi’s is taking this curve ID campaign, with custom fitting sessions that sound like a celebration of denim shopping rather than one more step in the journey to end the agony (of sizing, that is). While this won’t be the end of the denim frustration forever, this is a start. RSVP for your closest city and take a trip to Levi’s for gifts, snacks, and (gasp!) jeans that fit.

RSVP here and don’t forget to Like Levi’s on facebook!
