Denim Insider: What’s The Kutie Protocol?

Ever since Kutie Protocol glamored us with their trendy kiddie denim parachute pants, we knew we had to talk to the dual behind the Australian fashion label which produces “premium denim wear for children with the latest grown-up trends.”  Just launched in September 2010, Kutie Protocol went the socially-conscious route by sourcing and manufacturing their collections in Medellin, Colombia. “We buy local textiles, recycled materials and we invest in sustainable fabrics. We wash our products in a laundry which have their own private water treatment plant, recycling over 70% of the water and using ‘Tonello’s’ washers which are the top of its class in terms of water and energy efficiencies,” says Co-Founder Ian-Michael Farkas.

Ian-Michael’s wife, Vanessa, is the Creative Director, and has led the design direction for the past year.  She studied and worked in the fashion industry in Milan, Barcelona and Sydney for close to a decade.

What led you to designing denim for kids?
We simply wanted to help children in Colombia; we have a passion for fashion and found the adult market to be saturated.

What was your inspiration behind this current collection?
Iconic couples, real life or made up, you know? Like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin = acid wash; we wanted to find a source of inspiration as a concept for future collections.  We also take on street fashion and blogs to feed the mood board.

Polarn O. Pyret slim fit, skinny color denim.

Polarn O. Pyret slim fit, skinny color denim.

Just out:  color denim by Swedish children’s clothing label Polarn O. Pyret (a.k.a. PO.P) is now 20% off through April 8.  Better yet, they are skinny jeans for the kiddies!  Why would that be important?  Have you tried to find the perfect-fitting pair of jeans for your kids that are both stylish and don’t fall down to the ankles when your progeny runs around the playground?  The fact is, skinny jeans for kids aren’t the same denim legging, body-hugging kind they make for adults.  These jeans are generally cut slimmer overall and narrow in the calf.  With 3% stretch, your kids will still be able to run, jump and do cartwheels to their heart’s content.  With so many stand-out colors to choose from (availability depends on size), your kiddies will be oh-so-stylish this spring and summer.  Bonus: it will be easy to spot your wandering toddler in the crowd.  Sizes range from 2 years to 11 years.

LOVE Is Closing Its Doors

Sad to hear it, but that quaint little shop in Connecticut is closing its doors.  Hopefully, many of you will be able to take advantage of its going-out-of-business sale.  That, hopefully means that their wonderfully organic denim collection for kids will also be on sale.

(From LOVE’s Newsletter):
We are writing to thank you. . . .  and share our decision to close LOVE.

As you know we have been holding sales over the past two weeks. What you don’t know is we have been negotiating with our landlord, meeting with accountants, talking to other shopkeepers and designers, reading WWD and doing lots of thinking in the hopes of finding a way to survive in this economy. Other than the supportive sale shopping we have had, all signs point us to closing LOVE a year earlier than we had planned. We do not make this decision lightly and up until now did not consider closing an option. But the time for our shop is past… and we want you to know how much we have enjoyed sharing with you our idea of a magical childhood.

LOVE will remain open until May 30th.

Effective immediately all sales are final. No returns, no exchanges. Everything is 60% off including DucDuc floor models. We also are selling store fixtures (like lighting), prices will be marked.

We will be putting out Summer and Fall 08 merchandise Monday May 18th.

Saturday May 23rd we will add all items from the warehouse.

We will take phone orders.

* artwork and special orders will not be discounted

Thank you for your support it has been great fun –
Kristin & Katie
