We know it’s IMPOSSIBLE to imagine right now, as the humidity weighs down on us, but bi-polar New York weather does not entirely remove the possibility of another chilly day before the steady summer weather sets in. We learned that lesson the hard way a couple weeks ago when the temp dropped without warning, and we were running around in our little cut-off shorts! That same week, our blog editor Michelle Christina whipped up a little chilly-weather street style in her favorite pair of Kasil jeans.
Here’s what MC has to say about her jeans…
“These Kasil skinny jeans are the most comfortable jeans I have ever owned. The denim stretches to your movement, but is thick enough for a chilly day. I always cuff them when I wear them with wedges—I love the deep blue underside of the fabric and the super-rich wash. You do have to be careful with this kind of saturated blue denim though… I dyed a white leather purse blue without knowing it.
This time I paired the jeans with a sheer layered navy top and an H&M blood-orange tank. That particular day, the trench over top (althrough it was thin), was totally necessary.”

Creative Director for Raven Denim, Yael Torbati, has an attention to detail, vintage inspired aesthetic, and an extensive knowledge of fit. That is exactly what yields for exciting new cuts and styles season after season. Fabrics are sourced from the best denim mills. Every garment is cut and sewn in Los Angeles. And the hand washes are processed locally too. Raven is a collection that offers a trend setting collection for both men and women. Read on for our exclusive interview:
Denim Therapy: Lets start from the beginning. How did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Raven: I’ve pretty much wanted to be a designer for as long as I can remember…I recently found some funny old sketches at my parents house (maybe I was around 8 years old) of some very well endowed ladies wearing swimsuits and evening gowns. Probably inspired by the Miss Universe pageant or something.
DT: Are there other denim brands you consider your immediate competition? How do you differentiate yourself from the hundreds of popular denim brands afloat right now?
Raven: There are so many denim brands out there, but I guess my immediate competition would be other denim lines that offer lots of fashion denim like Current/Elliot, MiH, Kasil. I like to think Raven looks different by offering up ideas that are not necessarily on everyones radar, meaning that I don’t read into fashion forecasting too intently because then you just end up looking like everybody else.
DT: Do you have any pre-designing rituals?
Raven: Mainly procrastination! Then usually karaoke gets me going…
DT: Describe the person who represents your ideal target customer—the customer you have in mind when you’re planning a collection.
Raven: The Raven woman & man are both professional, creative, smart, fun, easygoing, and light hearted. They have a classic aesthetic when it comes to fashion and don’t like bells and whistles. They appreciate fine details and refined fits/washes.
DT: Can you give us hint about what’s next for?
Raven: For women, spring/summer 2011 is full of comfortable, relaxed silhouettes that are still totally flattering and sexy. So slouchy/sexy is a key look! 70’s silhouettes like high waisted wide leg jeans, and flares are also sprinkled throughout the line, and shorts are so important and have been expanded on in a big way.
DT: What would be your dream collaboration? Any plans of that in the future?
Raven: Honestly, I haven’t really thought about that…Liberace?
DT: What are the most popular washes/fits in the line? What are your favorites, and how would you style them?
Raven: Some of my favorites in the arena of slouchy/sexy are the Willow in Dusk, Poppy in Antique, Vivee in Pebble, Jemma in Spruce, & Rowan in Marvel. I would wear the Poppy in Antique with a white vintage victorian era sleeveless top and wooden high heel sandals. My favorite high waist is the Orly in Poolside which I would wear with the thinnest t-shirt I have tucked in & platforms to show off the extra long leg a high waist jean creates. I’ll be wearing short all summer long like the Gilda in Chambray, Alix in Marvel, and the Vivian in checkers which I would wear with a black silk top & Bensimon sneakers.
DT: Do you have any favorite/least favorite denim trends right now?
Raven: I’m not a big fan of the long denim skirt especially the one that is supposed to look like you converted jeans into a long skirt. It seems that no matter what your body type is, it kind of just makes you look like a blob with no butt. Not the best look.
DT: Street style and style blogs are huge in the industry right now as a source of inspiration, influencing the high end labels rather than vice versa. How much does street style influence your designing?
Raven: I always check out street style blogs- they do serve up inspiration as well as entertainment.
DT: How many pairs of denim do YOU own?
Raven: I have no clue- way too many to count. I know, it’s a rough life!
DT: Raven- what does it stand for? And why did you choose that as the name of your brand?
Raven: I’m not the founding designer of the brand so I can’t say I know the answer to that. Perhaps there is some bird lovin’ behind the name.
DT: Favorite celeb wearing your denim?
Raven: Tie for Megan Fox and Halle Berry

Last week we introduced you to Kasil Denim’s super-wearable SS’11 line, and today we have a one-on-one with designer David Lim to find out what goes on behind the Kasil curtain. Find out how this designer compares denim to cooking ingredients, and what his favorite looks are in the collection.

Denim Therapy: Lets start from the beginning. What inspired you to get this brand off the ground?
David Lim: This can get long but the short story is… It started out of my father’s Custom Tailoring business. Making custom jeans for Pro-athletes like Kobe and Rick Fox and many others. The love was being able to provide premium jeans to guys that could afford premium but couldn’t necessarily find any that fit… which eventually transpired into launching KASIL in 2002 for women and 2006 for men. I’ve learned a great deal from my father and he has been my biggest influence as to why I’m doing this.
DT: How do you differentiate yourself from the hundreds of popular denim brands afloat right now?
DL: It really is like comparing two spaghetti dishes by 2 different cooks. Cook 1 may use the exact same ingredients as I do, but the difference may be that Cook 2 could use better quality ingredients and put more time into the process. All in all, the premium denim world all claim to have the best fit, use the best fabric and have the best finishes which should all be true.
It’s all about what we stand for and how we present ourselves to the world, we love what we do and we make great jeans. Behind the curtains i’m sure we all work our asses off trying to make the best collection season after season.
DT: Do you have any pre-designing rituals?
DL: Get the coffee started, get the music going, and a room just to myself with my sketch pad and laptop.

We’ve officially snapped into spring mode! We’re all about light-wash jeans, sunshine, and anything you can wear to a picnic. So you can imagine our delight when KASIL, a line developed by the hands of fine artist David Lim, released images of their gorgeous, clean spring 2011 line for us to gawk over. With washes inspired by painting techniques and an acute focus on the perfect fitted jean, KASIL denim is a study in vintage vs. modern and what the contemporary customer truly craves: Style and function.
KASIL kicked off “KASIL Workshop” last summer with former Rachel Zoe assistant Taylor Jacobsen, a collaboration that has thus far given way to the Minx “ultra skinny” silhouetted jean you’ll see below. Designer David Lim is a firm believer in trends originating from the street and recognizes the power of bringing those trends into the line, and it plays through in his approachable, stylish creations.
A note from David Lim…
“Denim is alive! Denim fades, wrinkles and creases over time the more you wear. Random holes and rips that suddenly appear are all natural characteristics of your jeans. That’s the beauty of denim, each hole, rip, crease, wrinkle, dirt, or paint that has become of your favorite pair is a story that is told within your life.” —Designer David Lim of KASIL
Check out some of our favorite looks from the spring 2011 womens line! We’re especially in love with the Minx skinny jeans in “Cake” wash.
Kasil denim is currently available at Free People, Revolve Clothing, and Intermix. Stay tuned for what KASIL denim has cooking—including our exclusive Q&A with David Lim, which will follow shortly!
