Denim Online Shopping Tip: How To Avoid Muffin Tops

What is the golden rule for denim shopping? Avoid muffin tops by buying jeans with at least an 8″ rise! The rise is the length from the bottom of the crotch to the top of the waist band. Buying jeans without trying them on is hard enough, but this is one regulation to stick by if you want the best chance of flattering your figure. Sarah reminds us of this all-important rule in this week’s video below.

Buy The Next Size Up If Jeans Have No Stretch

Here’s a denim shopping tip that will probably save you some frustration while you’re stocking up for spring—especially if you’re shopping online. You may have a general idea of your denim size, but be careful when shopping for denim without stretch. No stretch means no give, at all. Buy the next size up to avoid discomfort and muffin tops.

The Fall Denim Colors You Should Be Shopping For

According to the Rachel Zoe report, contrasting colors are the hot trend in accessories and clothing this fall. From jewel tones at opposite ends of the spectrum to black contour trim on bright orange bags, you can’t go wrong when opposites attract. So how does this trend apply to shopping for jeans? Here are three ways to make it work.

1. Shop your closet. What’s in there already? If you have a ton of dark tops and cardigans, you can spring for a few gorgeous hues in denim (we love these Agatha Ruiz de la Prada mint green jeans) to mix and match with your darks this season. Half of the equation is already done!

2. Check the color wheel. What’s your favorite color? What’s the closest compliment? If you love royal blue, go for a rich burnt orange. If you love butter yellow, try a muted purple blazer. Be bold!

3. Dip-dye denim has all the contrast you need, right in one look! If you’re not into color this season, you can go for a dip-bleached denim piece instead. Or if you’re feeling crafty, you can DIY your own.

Denim Tip Of The Day: Buy Your Fit, Not Your Size

We all feel a bit defeated when we have to buy a size up, but if you want a pair of jeans to have the perfect fit, don’t stick to a number just because that’s the size you think you should be. Buy up or down as needed. Every line and style is cut differently, and no matter what “size” you end up buying, you will still look good, because it’s how the jeans fit that shows. Remember that no one sees the little size tab on the inside of the jeans except for you!

Today’s tip comes to you from Jennifer Wojinski, Design Director at HABITUAL and editor of The Habit Blog.
