What if your jeans could purify the air? The team at Catalytic Clothing is proving that is indeed possible. Catalytic Clothing is an ongoing research project which melds fashion with science. In their second project entitled, “Field of Jeans,” jeans have been treated with a photocatalyst which breaks down contaminants once it touches the surface of these jeans, when it is exposed to light. The contaminants can then be washed off. Professor Helen Storey (who has worked with Valentino, among others) heads the team, which also include notable scientists and research fellows. Professor Storey is currently Professor of Fashion and Science at the London College of Fashion. Jeans were donated for the project, which was presented at Newcastle University (UK) in March.
