15 Denim Standouts From The Menswear Fashion Shows, Fall 2012

New York Fashion Week may be in full swing,  but we didn’t want to blow through the week without acknowledging the menswear fashion shows in Europe.  Decidedly more subdued this time around, not to say there weren’t theatrics in play (Jean Paul Gaulter and Ann Demeulemeester notwithstanding) nor performance art (check out Thom Browne’s presentation), many brands incorporated denim into their Fall-Winter 2012 menswear collections while continuing to reach far back to source 300 years of fashion.

Agnes B FW2012: sleep jeans serve as a canvas for their genre-eclectic collection.
Agnès B
infused denim into its Fall 2012 collection, which started off as a predictable menswear show, until it took a sharp turn towards androgyny with the introduction of a denim wrap skirt and tunic silhouettes which softened the male silhouette against cuffed, loose-fit jeans.   Some of the models were styled with ballet flats, which was not lost on us.

Balmain Fall 2012: still rock 'n' roll and military, but less gritty.
Olivier Rousteing isn’t trying to rock the boat too much at Balmain, after stepping in for Christophe Decarnin.  As you can see, jeans for men continue to be biker-chic, while the rest of the collection invokes the aristocracy of the Napoleonic era.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall-Winter 2012 continues to source from the past to reinvent dapper style.

Your Milk Man or Soda Jerk is reincarnated, thanks to Dolce & Gabbana‘s continued retro motif, juxtaposing a bit of Dandy style with some Blue Collar appeal.  Heavily whiskered jeans with a deep cuff signals a changing of the guard: the inseams and the rise are going up.
Dries Van Noten FW2012: efforts made to work with denim in graphics and color processes.

Dries Van Noten may be showing his appreciation for Dutch master painters (though he, himself, is Belgian): a warm orange jean is both trendy and classic-looking against the collection’s wild and experimental takes on the classic denim jackets. Evidently, the brand is not afraid to work outside the box.
Dsquared2 Fall-Winter 2012: a continued experiment in denim from top to bottom.

Dsquared2 has moved out of the Old West and continues to re-work denim in its various forms: a classic denim jacket holds metal appliques on its sleeves; drop-waist, contrast fabric waistband jeans are becoming the brand’s signature look, and an Argyle-washed chambray shirt was a creative turn and proof that the brand has placed a considerable amount of investment into denim fashion.

Dries Van Noten Dip Dye Denim

If tie-dye and acid wash aren’t really your thing, the extreme contrast of dip-dye denim might be more your taste. From light wash to extreme blue (or a pop-color, if you’re feeling daring), the impact made on a pair of jeans or a denim jacket that experience this transformation can turn an entire outfit from common to killer. Dries Van Noten has a few key pieces on the market that are giving this trend another spin.

AW 2011 Menswear Roundup Part 2

From Milan to Paris  its safe to say that the Autumn/Winter 2011 Menswear collections that have been showing these last few weeks are anything but underwhelming. Every designer has taken a step in a different direction, which makes for great and innovative fashion especially when it comes to denim. Two things are certain, this is definitely a season of firsts and a season of change.

aw_menswear

Muted and worn out denim in over-sized, billowy silhouettes pulled perfectly together with a daffy styling aesthetic that only Vivienne Westwood could pull off  was the name of the game for the designers namesake collection–and one change that we love! With stand-alone denim separates ranging from denim jackets to jeans  that can be  integrated into any wardrobe, this usually overly-conceptual line has been the denim surprise of the season thus far. Dark red lipstick and finger wave hairdo are optional, of course!

vivienne_westwood_aw2011_3

Like we said in our last round up, AW 2011 is all about color and Dolce & Gabbana embraces this fully giving their collection some definite passion! Tapered, low-slung jeans in a variety of red and grey worn and acid washes created a slouchy silhouette that add an edge to the overall glam look of  multi-color sequins blazers a la Bryan Ferry. Skinny leather suspenders and heavy duty boots finish off the look.  As Style.com puts it, it’s definitely “…glam for a brash, butch new age.”

It’s no secret that most of our denim go-to brands are going through a major denim deficit–at least when it come to the actual use of the textile. After last seasons heavy use of bleached out denim goods, we were excited to see what Dries Van Noten would offer us next. However, we got hardly anything to subside our  denim cravings. But no matter… instead many designers like Van Noten have opted get the classic denim look by way of other materials. Among the beautiful assortment of garments that appear to be denim (even to us at first glance) from shirts to coats, are a pair of actual denim motorcycle pants that unzip from waist to ankle. Though not exactly what we’re used, it’ll suffice.

Denim & Metallics for New Year’s Eve Outfits that Shine

As Balmain reminded us repeatedly over the past year, metallics and denim are a match made in heaven. Whether it’s sparkles, studs, or a sleek panel of metallic mesh, this accent can turn a basic denim garment into something extremely festive (or totally badass). This New Year’s Eve, it’s time to toss the frou-frou cocktail dress and let the room know you’re there to party! Check out some of our favorite ways to wear metallic accessories and accents with your denim.

nye2010-denim-metallics-collage0011

1. French fashion blogger extraordinaire Betty of Le Blog de Betty kicks around in some metal-toe boots by OFFICE (?95) – buy them at OFFICE.

2. It makes a lot of sense to turn to the makers of denim classics themselves to turn out compatible accessories to help illuminate your look. A metallic belt is functional, eye-catching, and sure to serve you well into the new year. We love this 1-SNAP-A belt by Diesel ($130) – buy it here.

3. Steal the show in this velvet vest with metallic thread embroidery and mirror detail! The ornate piece goes perfect with a pair of ripped cut-off jean shorts. Nasty Gal had this Marrakesh version for sale and it’s since been sold, but you can DIY, scour vintage shops, or try this gold-embellished nude bolero at $108.

4. New York-based glamour-expert and blogger-gone-style-icon The Glamourai layers with a metallic sequin cardigan over a pair of Hudson jeans. Metallic sequin blouse by Elizabeth and James ($185.50) – buy it at Beso.

5. The luxe golden accent jewelry and accessories at Chanel work perfectly when applied to denim. Pile on the bangles, jewels, and rings while keeping your denim attire simple to make a bold statement. Seen here via the Cherry Blossom Girl. Try these Giles & Brother golden bracelets ($168) from Net-A-Porter, or a Kenneth Jay Lane Double Cross Cuff ($231) from Shop Bop. For party goers on a budget, this beautiful Pelle Filigree Cuff ($20) from Alloy.

6. Taking #3 a bit further, Dries Van Noten SS/11 shows us that layering textured metallics on top and pairing with a pair of jeans creates a look that encompasses the spirit of partying in luxury and the careless vibe of downtown new york city. Image from JAK & JIL BLOG. Try this Diane Von Furstenberg ($545) from Cusp, paired with this VINCE sequin tea in antique gold ($295) from Revolve Clothing. Or try this eye-popping (and exceedingly affordable) Wet Seal variation in red.

With these styling tips and a whole universe full of after-Christmas sales, you’ll be able to rock party-tailored denim on the big night out and turn heads all year long.

Runway Highlights: Dries Van Noten S/S 2011

dvn_ss11_4-11
If you liked the tough and easy elegance of Dries Van Noten’s S/S 2011 menswear collection, then you’ll most certainly love the effortless sense of posh in the womenswear collection. From generously sized cotton pants that were a primary component, to the bleached-out ombr? effect of  the denim details, this collection is without a doubt perfection.

Denim Goes Wide For Spring

Now, I know that I’ve made comments about how too many designers have taken influence from the senventies lately, but that’s because they have! Everyone from Dries Van Noten, Derek Lam, and Elie Tahari has drawn inspiration from the era. Some good, some bad, and some too literal. But I have to say that one thing did stay consistent collection to collectino: the fresh yet old-school vibe of the wide-leg trouser.

With that said, move over skinny jeans, there’s a new look in town and it isn’t skin tight!

Skinnies have dominated the fashion world for what seems like forever, so in true fashion fashion there was bound to be a change. I think that we can all agree the transition started with the introduction of the boyfriend jean and then the harem pant, which gave way to a more relaxed and wider-set silhouette. But let’s be honest, everyone knows that they–as well as the skinny–are not always the most flattering.

So, what better timing for the come-back of the wide-leg trouser, right? Unlike the more slouchy look of the harem pant and the overall baggy aesthetic of the boyfriend jean, the wide-leg has a more streamlined and sophisticated look, not to mention that it flatters a lot more different body types. The higher rise helps to define the waist while the wide cut elongates the legs, making for a really graceful but sexy silhouette.

Now I’m not saying that this doesn’t have the potential to go completely wrong. I mean, too much of anything can result in some pretty bad looks. But done in a clean, and–as I always say–simple yet effective way the wide-leg has the potentiality of being the next ‘must have’ denim style.

The question is, are you ready to ditch your skin tight companions? What do you think? Is it really time to say goodbye to your skinnies?

WWD: Men’s Paris Preview: Q&A With Dries Van Noten

PARIS ??” Born into a family of tailors, Dries Van Noten has been designing men??™s and women??™s wear under his own label since the mid-Eighties. WWD caught up with the Belgian designer on the eve of his spring 2010 show tonight to discuss the collection and get his views on creating apparel for men.

WWD: What is the mood of the spring collection?
Dries Van Noten: We are working on something which is very elegant and sartorial??¦and mixed to a kind of ethnic chic.

WWD: That sounds like quite an evolution from your January show. What prompted the transition?
D.V.N.: For me, it??™s not a huge shift, going from one thing to another. It has more to do with the fact that I wanted to find another approach to ethnic, making it very smart, elegant and sartorial. Immediately it gives it a different feel. Almost all the fabrics are handmade, handwoven and hand-printed. We are also using some very high-technological fabrics, as well as traditional English wool.
