The spectrum of blue and gray attire is a perfect match to the concrete Gotham landscape, but the clothes come to life in the hustle and bustle of curiously attractive passers-by clad in head-to-toe in our favorite fibers. Skinny jeans cuffed at the bottom seam to be the recurring trend this season, with hip-length denim jackets and white wash jeans of all treatments. LOS ANGELES ??” Premium denim brand Citizens of Humanity is giving a twist to T-shirts through a collaboration with artist Will Lemon.
The Huntington Park, Calif.-based company is sprucing up tanks, short-sleeve Ts, tunics and three other women??™s spring styles with Lemon??™s technique of blending screen-printing with hand-painting. A tank top pops in a blue snakeskin print mottled with what resembles neon oil spills, a gray scoop-neck T-shirt is enlivened with a bold splash of azure and ruby raindrops fall all over a yellow tank dress. All will retail for approximately $135.
???I envisioned an outdoor scene and I first saw a snake sunbathing in a field of tall, verdant grass,??? said Lemon, whose previous fashion collaborations were with Marc Jacobs and MAC. ???I also imagined a small stream with a slight waterfall nearby and these first three images that were there in my mind became the metaphors for the prints that eventually ended up on the T-shirts.???
Cut from a soft, light cotton knit, the pieces are also washed and dyed by hand at Citizens of Humanity??™s laundry.
???The collaboration with Will is a highlight of the special things that we can do,??? said Adriano Goldschmied, executive vice president of design at Citizens of Humanity, which also owns his denim brand GoldSign. ???We own already a lot of technology and know-how that we can apply to our T-shirt. We own our own dye house and laundry. Our goal is to make something different.???
Choosing to collaborate with Lemon helps Citizens of Humanity differentiate itself from competitors in a challenging economy as it seeks to expand its jeans business with complementary categories such as T-shirts. Goldschmied said the company is also considering applying Lemon??™s screen-painting technique to jeans and men??™s T-shirts.

Nicky Hilton in Abercrombie & Fitch
Jean skirts are back in fashion this season. Update a typically bohemian or western look with a boyfriend jacket and ankle boots a la Nicky Hilton for a fresh, casual and edgy look.
Tools needed: Scissors, tape measure, utility knife, sewing machine
Step 1: Cut jeans to desired skirt length
Step 2: Rip open the inseam (inside the legs) with a seam ripper or utility knife
Step 3: Use excess fabric (from the legs that were cut off) to make a patch insert.
Step 4: Sew patch onto inseams in front and back, then trim the hem so it’s even. Wash, dry and wear!
Tip: Jean skirts are great for showing off legs, so keep the length well above the knees. Skirts that are too long can look bulky and dowdy.

As DKNY Jeans’ latest celebrity design collaborator, Hilary Duff is determined to prove her days starring as Lizzie Maguire are long gone.
The 21-year-old actress-singer-designer showed up early for her 11 a.m. meeting at the DKNY Jeans showroom at 240 West 40th St. to discuss her new brand, which she’s calling Femme for DKNY Jeans. She’d just flown in from Los Angeles, and there were no publicists, managers or entourage in tow. She was staying at her friend’s Manhattan apartment, wheeling two suitcases behind her.
“One of the hardest things is to come up with a name,” said Duff of her new line, which she was wearing: a gray fringe T-shirt, leggings and a vest. “But I think Femme works really well and explains the line perfectly as feminine but tough all at the same time. It’s aggressive, but in a good way.”
This isn’t the first time Duff had to come up with a name for her own fashion collection. Five years ago, as a teenager, she launched Stuff by Hilary Duff, which used to produce everything from T-shirts to bedsheets. That line is now being phased out and, with the exception of eyewear, there is no longer product on the market.
“I’ve lost interest in it, and I’m ready to move on and do other things,” she explained of the line, which sold at retailers such as Target, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s. “I feel like the brand was for younger girls, and I want to do things for girls my own age now.”
The partnership with the Liz Claiborne Inc.-owned DKNY Jeans is a big move for Duff – one she plans to be involved in every step of the way. And while she isn’t the first celebrity to partner with the company – Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz was first and actress Rachel Bilson was second – she’s nonetheless dedicated to it.
“I’ve been learning so much about how the process happens from how much certain things cost to shipping schedules – it has been an amazing learning experience,” she said.
The Femme for DKNY Jeans line will launch in stores this fall. And while Wentz’s and Bilson’s collections only sold at retail for one season, the company has signed Duff for two – fall and holiday – with the option to extend the agreement depending on performance.
“From the feedback we’ve gathered from our customers, they wished these collaborations were available to them for a longer period of time,” said Kevin Monogue, president of DKNY Jeans. “They wanted to see more, which is what led us to working with Hilary and making her partnership last longer.”

DKNY has always had ad campaigns centered around the Big Apple. So this spring, DKNY jeans will be partnering with the street style photographer extraordinaire, Scott Schuman, aka The Sartorialist. They will be collaborating in creating the new spring/summer 2009 ad campaigns.
The line-up for faces to grace the ad campaigns are to be Chanel Iman ( I love this young model), Daisy Lowe (now global ‘it’ girl and love child of Pearl Lowe and Gavin Rossdale), Luc Worrell (a popular English model and boyfriend to Kelly Osbourne) and Sean Lennon (we all know who he is).
Go to www.dkny.com for a look at their line of jeans. For an all around great fitting jean try the Soho Jean Short 30. This stretch denim is in a dark rinse with a traditional 5 pocket style and contrast top stitching throughout. They are comfortable with a slight low rise and boot cut leg that flatters most figures across the board. At only $48, they are so worth it!
