Put in the hands of style influencers like Elin Kling and popular fashion brands who court them, you get a versatile and elegant layering piece. Or not. Nothing says summer like the smell of sunscreen, hot asphalt, and smoke from the barbeque. Maybe you’re not a fan of the first two scents, but the third? It’s the sign of good food, good company, and good times. For all the BBQs you’re sure to attend this summer—from now on through the Fourth of July to Labor Day—we have plenty of suggestions. Go for a relaxed look with loose-fitting cuffed jeans and a lightweight tee, wear an adorable floral dress for a pop of color underneath a denim vest, or pair your on-trend pastel denim shorts with equally sweet hues. Just don’t spill the ketchup.

There’s no stodgy styling in the spring/summer 2012 lookbook for Topshop’s denim line for ladies and we’re super-glad. The funky fresh outfits would be perfect for a summer music festival or a day-to-night beach look. Guess we’re not the only ones planning for summer already! Based on these images, we have an excellent variety to look forward to: floral, metallic, faded, and colored jeans galore. Plus, bedazzled shorts, highlighter-saturated jackets, and tie-dye denim vests. All of these pieces work together with a slightly hip-hop vibe, a colorful break in neutral toned monotony.

Jessica Alba is one of our favorite celeb denim style icons when it comes to casual, every-day outfits that are chic, comfortable, and versatile. Her latest ensemble has us really psyched: a Genetic Denim vest over a long floral maxi dress. The traditional denim-over-dress equation is hard to go wrong with, but a few pointers on making it work.
Styling tips:
1. Respect outfit proportion! If the dress is long, opt for a cropped vest or jacket. A mini-dress merits a longer jacket/vest (or even oversize).
2. Light wash denim looks amazing in the spring over florals. Dark wash lends itself to late summer and early fall, matching a darker hued printed dress.
3. If the denim vest’s cut and wash make the outfit extra masculine, balance the look with jewelry and a scarf.

Topman channels the retro vibe of the 50s for their fall 2011 campaign clad in smart silhouettes and classic light wash denim. Newness is added to nerdy tweed blazers and cool varsity jackets with on-trend knits in bold patterns from fairisle and Aztect to Navajo (and lets not forget a killer leopard tie) thrown into the mix. A cool denim vest and denim jacket give the otherwise dapper look a definite streetwear appeal. Guys, take a hint! Check out the full campaign bellow.

The new G-Star x Kitson product line is an easy addition to most fall wardrobes and their $90 bag is a good example of the aesthetics our tote x denim appreciation post paid tribute to yesterday. The color story here is an easy one to follow: medium to dark wash denim and a moderate range in hues of beige. We’re seeing a lot more of these jean company sweatpant hybrids lately, from Diesel to d.brand and now G-star. But are you guys wearing ‘em?… Check out our interview with Rosario Dawson from the launch event of the line and style snaps from the launch party as well.

You know, one thing still on our summer to-do list is going on a spur of the moment road trip—windows down, tunes on blast, and looking casual-cool in our favorite denim get ups (obviously). This editorial out of the pages of H&M Magazine’s Summer 2011 issue shot by Daniel Jackson has definitely got our inspiration going with its perfect bold print-on-print and denim combos. Florals and animal print topped with a denim vest? Uh, yes please! All that’s left is a pair of oversized sunnies, a killer swim suit, and a pair of denim overalls (for easy wardrobe changes) and we’re set. Alright, who’s coming?

With Balmain no longer in the hands of Christophe Decarnin we were quite anxious to see where the always rockin’ brand would go. Lucky for us apparently his former assistant and now creative director of the house, Olivier Rousteing, seems to have the same affinity for the moto meets tailoring appeal. Denim remains a prominent part of the collection for the spring 2012 season including the iconic Balmain paneled biker jean this time in a slightly looser fit and in new washes like killer washed out pastel hues—totally on trend for spring. Washed out denim jackets, vests, and workshirts are also thrown into mix definitely keeping the casual-cool guy look alive. We definitely dig!
