Before & After: Jeans With Ripped Knees

In line with last week’s before & after post (in case you missed it, we shared a before & after repair involving worn-out whiskers that eventually tore), this week we repaired jeans with tears in the knee area, where whiskers had also appeared after years of wear. Talk about a favorite pair! Check out the before and after below, and send in your favorite pair of jeans for some denim-doctor-ing if they need it.

Before & After: Jeans With Ripped Whiskers

As you might remember from last week, we repair more than just the typical crotch hole and knee hole here at Denim Therapy. A pair of jeans came in recently with an array of worn-out tears in the whisker region, likely from years of loving wear. If you have a favorite pair of jeans, you may notice a similar pattern (in which case you should send them in, asap). Check out the before and after below, to see what we were able to do for this customer.

Before & After: Jeans Ripped At The Seam

It isn’t always the knee or the crotch region of jeans that suffers damage. We recently received some denim from a customer that featured a slash right across the seam. We were able to employ our expert denim repair techniques and reinforce the repair so this denim-lover’s lifestyle won’t leave them with extra AC for fall. Check out the before and after below.

3 Ways To Distress Your Cut-Off Shorts This Summer

So you’ve got a gorgeous new pair of cut-off shorts (or maybe you hacked them off yourself, or used our expert denim cut-off service) but they’re just not quite distressed enough for you? There are several easy ways you can make your brand new shorts look extremely well-worn, from physical abuse to bleach and beyond. Check out a few of our favorites below.

distressed vintage denim shorts

1. Sandpaper, scissors & razors. Tools like scissors, X-Acto knives, sandpaper, cheese graters, and other potentially abrasive objects are amazing tools for making your jeans look vintage. When using these items, be sure to slip a piece of cardboard or a protective layer inside the pocket and the actual jean, so you are only distressing one surface as a time.

Distress where it’s natural! You’ll see natural wear and tear in places like pocket tops, hems, and anywhere whiskers form (usually around the crotch and the top of the thigh). We recommend starting out by cutting some light slashes, and then sanding and tearing at the fibers surrounding the cut/hem/etc.

How far you go with this is entirely up to you.

2. Bleach & dye.

Another great way to achieve a vintage look is to include a few inconspicuous splatters of bleach, or use a desaturated dye in colors like peach, brown, or even pale yellow. You can check out our bleaching tutorial here. Fabric dye instructions range from product to product, but you’ll get better results if the fibers are 100% cotton.

3. Let the elements do the work.

This is probably one of our favorites. It takes time and patience, and also willingness to accept whatever random things may happen to your jeans. Tie them to your fire escape, pin them to your roof, hang them out your window, or find some other place where they can be stationary in the elements of nature. Running water, summer storms, intense wind, and even wild animals will all contribute to the worn in look of your denim.

Overall tips:

+ Distress jeans that are 100% cotton sans-stretch fibers, or else you risk some major shape change after you’ve made your scissor holes & razor marks.

+ Get creative! Cut a slash in the thigh of your shorts and pull the pocket through, or cut out a design in the back pocket and reinforce with stitching. The possibilities are endless.

+ Safety first! Always use the proper precautions when using power tools, chemical dyes, etc. Read the warnings on all packages and wear goggles/gloves if necessary.

Don’t forget, if you need help making your favorite jeans into perfect cut-offs, you can use our expert denim cut-off service.

How To Get The Perfect Hem Length

When you take in your jeans to get hemmed (for instance, via our Denim Therapy expert hemming service!) be sure to bring a pair of shoes with you to wear when getting measured. Before your jeans go under the knife you’ll want to make sure the shoes you measure with are the shoes you’re planning to pair with the jeans (or at the least, a similar heel/lack of heel). This will take the guess work out of figuring out the measurement you’ll be happiest with.

Slimbs: The First American Slim Fit Jean

The guys of Denim Therapy (and whoever shops with them) know that it’s really hard (if not impossible) to find a pair of slim fit jeans that are comfortable, attractive, and priced reasonably. Slimbs, a fresh new denim brand that we’re super excited about, is prepared to change that. The founders of Slimbs spent over two years conferencing with some of the denim industry’s experts to narrow down the formula for their American slim fit jean, which is currently being developed in three styles: Selvage, Studio Blue, and Downtown Dark.

“Guys should feel comfortable, mentally and physically, when transitioning to a trendier style,” explains their Kickstarter campaign page, “We are here to put to rest the social stigma that surrounds slim fit jeans by introducing a new idea of slim – the American slim fit.”

Slimbs is prepared to deliver on the things that matter most, made from top quality Japanese denim at an amazing price that mass market jeans can’t compete with. Our favorite part? They’re also offering free repairs on every pair of jeans… because holes in the crotch aren’t in style, in any country. We’re proud to say we’ll be handling the repairs for Slimbs, right here at Denim Therapy.

Amber Heard Needs Her Jeans Repaired

As you guys know from today’s earlier post, we’re all about the destroyed denim trend. However, if you’re going to go for that look, why go half way? Anything less than full fledged tear-town makes you look like you just fell down the stairs, especially if the rest of the jeans look crisp and new. Such is the case with Johnny Depp’s fiance Amber Heard‘s jeans in this photo. We think she could use a little Denim Therapy. Our expert repair services would fix her up in no time!

A Customer Reviews Our Denim Repair Service

We love making our customers happy. You guys know that, right? Getting a glowing review from someone who we were able to help restore a beloved pair of jeans is the stuff that keeps this machine going. We wanted to share this one with you specifically, from a customer who sent us their before and after photos, as well as a detailed description of their denim repair experience.

“It’s always a real downer when your favorite pair of denim jeans gets torn or frayed seemingly beyond repair…but Denim Therapy has the solution.

They charge for repairing holes by the 1/2 inch, but you should know that they are not just doing a simple stitching or patching job: they are actually reweaving the denim using a special machine that is designed to repair denim fabric. In my pair of khaki jeans, the crotch had a big frayed hole inside the leg, but the repair job is very discreet and is even stronger than ever, woven (not sewn) together.

They also repaired a hole in the pocket made from keeping my smartphone in there. Drop-off and pick-up in Midtown was easy as can be, and they give you a lot of options. I highly recommend anyone to denim therapy who has jeans they think they can’t salvage, because these people can do it.” —Jan

Denim Therapy Repairs A Ripped Back Pocket

Denim Therapy knows a thing or two about the kind of damage your favorite pair of jeans withstands. Not only do you always reach for them when you’re getting dressed in the morning, but you also tend to put your phone, wallet, or keys in the same pocket each time, like clockwork. The result? What you see below: a rip in the back pocket caused by the wear and tear of years of service. Those loyal jeans shouldn’t be tossed, though! We’ll fix them up so you can keep on keepin’ on with your denim BFFs. Trust us.
