Art Fundraiser for Tara Subkoff at Deitch Projects

tara-subkoffTwo weeks ago an email circulated about Tara Subkoff being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor.  Her friends had band together to help raise funds for her upcoming surgery and the following year that she will be out of commission. The fundraiser took place last night at Deitch Projects in Soho and the event can be summed up in a bit of conversation I overheard, “She is a genius, just look at these clothes.”  Her archive collection of Imitation of Christ, started in 2000 but then sold in 2007, did warrant such a statement.

Reincarnating vintage pieces, collaborating with artists and being known for wacky fashion shows made the seven year run of the label leave unique pieces behind.  A dress made totally of yarn, floor length jean jackets and a distressed men’s suit jacket were some of the items for sale.

Also featured last night were donated artwork that was being auctioned.  A photograph of Mick Jagger, a painting of Michael Jackson, a photo with a grafittied “Paris Hilton was here” on the wall were some of the artwork.  The crowd at the event was wearing everything from shorts and T-shirts to dresses and high heels and of course, jeans.  True Religion, BDG, Seven for all Mankind and Joe’s Jeans were among the most popular.   The only sad part of the evening was leaving empty handed.

We are very sorry to say that our great friend Tara Subkoff has been diagnosed with a form of brain tumor known as an acoustic neuroma. While benign, it will be fatal if not operated on. The operation should take place in August and recuperation from the necessary surgery may take as long as a year. To help with Tara’s enormous medical costs, artworks are available for auction and a selection of Imitation of Christ couture is for sale. We would very much appreciate your support. Thank you!

The silent auction will continue through Saturday, July 18th. The bidding will close at 5 PM. Please call 212 343-7300 to place a bid or visit us at Deitch Projects, 76 Grand Street. In addition, Imitation of Christ couture is available for purchase at the gallery.

Attached is a list of the current items available.
