First there was Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in matching denim at the 2001 American Music Awards. The denim gown on Spears and denim tuxedo on Timberlake are forever ingrained on the impressionable minds of young millennials across the country. Then Katy Perry donned denim in an attempt to tug at the heart strings of her “90’s kids” fans with her date, Riff Raff, at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. In Perry’s famously kitschy fashion her gown was an obvious homage to the original worn by Spears.
Then Pharell Williams and his wife Helen Lasichanh wore matching double denim outfits last night at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards and the whole fashion world was entranced once again. This time, however, it appeared the couple updated the double denim look in an honest act of self expression. Pharell was decked out in a white tee, denim jacket and jeans in a matching shade. Lasichanh wore a denim button up shirt trendily buttoned all the way to the top underneath a distressed pair of overalls. Pharell is known for being true to his sense of self and once you remember that he has joined G-Star to create his own line of denim products made from recycled plastics, G-Star RAW for the the Oceans, the denim outfit seems perfectly appropriate.
Kate Bosworth graces the cover of Nylon Magazine’s March 2011 issue, lavished in various fashion caviar: an Isabel Marant sweater and pink denim shorts ensemble (the cover look), Chanel shoes, Fendi skirt, Missoni wrap, Moschino Cheap & Chic sweater—need we go on? The mag goes for the “music festival” vibe (think Coachella), which we think works for this part-time tomboy, part-time Red Carpet glamour queen.

On newsstands now, big screen starlet Leighton Meester is the cover girl for NYLON Magazine’s February 2011 issue. She sports a Diesel coated denim skirt paired with a satiny Marc Jacobs jacket (cut like a classic denim jacket, as it were). Shot by the mag’s Editor-in-Chief Marvin Scott Jarrett, Leighton is styled in plenty’o’denim, leading us to believe they magazine is trying to showcase a very casual, non-Blair Waldorf side of her persona. And with her new movie rolls showing her in very un-Blair like lights, we think it’s perfect timing for this prim princess to pull some nice, classic denim on.

Does this styling look familiar? NYLON are particularly notorious for denim cut-offs on their cover girls (and we couldn’t adore it more—this is one statement we rock all year round). For more denim shorts on pretty girls action, check out the coverage on Mila Kunis.
