Recently we repaired a pair of 21 oz Iron Heart jeans. It’s not the first time we’ve repaired such thick denim, but we thought we’d tell you guys a little bit about why it’s so special. Most jeans run at 12 or 13 oz, but in recent years, Japanese manufacturers like Samurai and Iron Heart have popularized the super thick jean for men. A few years ago, Samurai introduced a record-breaking 19 oz denim, which was then replaced by a 21 oz. Due to the difficulty in manufacturing (the fabric is made on vintage Japanese shuttle looms, which are meant for weaving 13-15 oz fabrics), Samurai dubbed the denim the “Cloth of Super Excellence.” The record has since been replaced by a 24 oz jean, but we still think these pants are pretty excellent.
If you look closely at the image below, you can see that there were holes in the crotch area that were repaired.
