Colored Denim & Painted Feet At Marithé + François Girbaud

We sat front row at the Marithé + François Girbaud men’s denim runway show at the Metropolitan Pavilion yesterday and caught an up-close glimpse of what’s next for the brand. Models careened down the runway with painted feet (some painted in stars and shapes, other painted with faux-sandal straps) and a mix of denim styles that reflected the past, present, and future of the Marithé + François Girbaud vision.

The first group represented the original vision of the brand, with signature construction and washes styled with layered t-shirts in pastel and pop-colors (we especially adored a violet and peach combination). The second group took to the runway in distressed colored denim. The third group wore jeans treated with the WattWash technique (which debuted during PROJECT Las Vegas to much acclaim). Finally, the “future wash” set, featuring graphic t-shirts and color-splashed denim that looked like it could indeed become the urban uniform of the future.

On the whole, it was a refreshing, fun show in the midst of standard NYFW elitism, with a live band, and NBA star Dwight Howard opening the show holding a globe in his hands. At the end, the models piled onto the runway cheering for Girbaud, all-smiles, and hugged each other as they returned backstage.
