Jeans and rock’n'roll have gone hand in hand since the dawn of the genre. From Mick Jagger‘s iconic denim jackets in the 60s to the shredded denim uniform of Nirvana in the 90s, denim has been the material of choice for some of the most famous rockstars in history. Levi’s Unzipped blog takes a look back at some of these stars, and their most iconic denim moments: the history of denim and rock’n'roll.
From Unzipped: The legendary grunge outfit Nirvana recently received its official induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame commemorating the 20th anniversary of the band’s iconic In Utero album. The band, in addition to producing universally lauded rock songs, was also known for making “angst” mainstream and defining an entire lifestyle of music—right down to the plaid and denim-addled wardrobe.
But Nirvana wasn’t the first rock act to don denim. Take a look at other royalties of rock who wore jeans while making music history. (See more)

From the time denim hit the market as functional, industrial uniforms to the moment skinny jeans became a staple in every woman’s closet, denim has always been a must-have. No closet is complete without a pair of worn-in, comfy boyfriend jeans — nor a pair of fierce dark wash jeans for days when you want to turn heads and take numbers. But it’s the celebrity denim culture that also fuels our love of amazing jeans. Seeing women like Miranda Kerr, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Kate Upton rocking our favorite brands in new and exciting (and sometimes totally off-duty) ways keeps us craving denim in our wardrobes. Harpers Bazaar takes a look at some of the ultimate jean queens of our current culture.

It-girl Erin Wasson looks amazing in the latest campaign from Madewell, featuring spring styles we’re coveting hard. Fashion Gone Rogue reports:
“American model Erin Wasson lands the spring-summer 2014 campaign from Madewell, looking the very picture of casual elegance in the shoot photographed on location in the island nation of Malta. Benny Horne captures the blonde beauty in the brand’s denim-rooted designs with a laid-back attitude. Erin also brought her bohemian style to Free People’s March catalogue where she got “married” in a Las Vegas style wedding.”

Taylor Swift was recently spotted strolling in New York wearing a pair of Black Orchid Black Jewel Jeggings in Malaga Wine (grab a similar pair of skinnies here). Colored skinny jeans are one of our favorite picks for transitional dressing between seasons, and Taylor nailed this lok wtith a neutral peak coat, a simple chic bag, and plaid scarf. She must know she looks good, too — she looks pretty content.

We posted a few weeks ago about the way skinny jeans almost ruined the American dollar—basically because US currency was being printed on special paper made largely from denim scraps provided by the denim industry, until spandex jeans became widely popular and the quality of denim scraps themselves with compromised in an epic way. Glamour posted a write-up on this same predicament, with an inside look at the way spandex denim changed …well, everything.
“Did you know that for the longest time—since the 1800s, in fact—U.S. dollars have been printed on a cotton-paper blend supplied by Crane—yes, the stationer? And, for the longest time, since the 1800s, Crane & Co. has gotten 30 percent of its cotton in the form of denim scraps from the garment industry!
But then, in the ’90s and ’00s, something happened in fashion that changed the money-making business forever. That something was spandex—and it started to make its way into nearly all mass-produced jeans in the United States.” (Read more)

Shailene Woodley, Divergent star who apparently loves saying “badass” (a little celeb trivia for you this afternoon) posed in front of the movie poster for the film she is featured in, wearing a pair of Levi’s Denim Shorts that seriously made us wish for warmer days. We love everything about this look, right down to how comfortable she appears in the ensemble. She paired the shorts with a simple leather jacket over a hoodie, and a sheer knit top.
