Denim News: Gap’s Denim Drive – Out with the old, 30% off with the new!

gap denim drive

Being an eco and charitable conscious person can certainly pay-off.  Help the Gap with their charitable initiative called Cotton to convert donated old denim into Ultra Touch Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation with the help of Cotton Incorporated.  Read WWD’s full article below and check in with the Gap to find participating locations.

Cotton Incorporated has partnered with Gap Inc. on a charitable initiative called Cotton: From Blue to Green. Beginning today and running through March 14, consumers who visit one of about 1,000 participating Gap stores in North America and Puerto Rico can donate their old denim to be converted into UltraTouch Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation and given to needy communities. In return, they receive a 30 percent discount on new denim purchases. Since the Cotton: From Blue to Green program began five years ago, enough denim has been donated to create cotton fiber insulation for more than 540 homes, the companies said. This is the first time a retailer has conducted the denim drive. (Source: WWD Staff)

Denim News Entertainment: How to Make it in America Reaction – Paper, Denim and Dollars

How to Make it in America, a new HBO tv series’ third episode is titled “Paper, Denim and Dollars”. For all you Bryan Greenberg fans, plug into the How to Make it in America website to watch the episode of Ben and Cam getting their Crisp Jeans business off the ground.

(By: Doug Norrie)

Blend TVI wasn’t sure if How to Make it in America would lend itself to weekly coverage. Going forward it may not. It turns out the machinations behind creating a business, while interesting, aren’t the biggest source of writing material. In “Paper, Denim and Dollars” Ben and Cam finally get their little venture off the ground and Rene takes his business to the streets.

It was nice to see Cam take something on and finally make it work in the form of actual dollars. When he sells the Wilfredo decks to a group of uptown prep school kids on the notion that Wilfredo is, in fact, crazy, he shows that his contribution to Crisp jeans will be more than bluster and smooth talking. Is it conceivable that he sold $1500 worth in an afternoon? Of course not, but hell a victory is a victory. What I loved to see was his and Ben’s ultimate dedication to their jeans and each other. That each is willing to go to any level (rent money, selling decks out of a shopping cart) to make their idea work is more a testament to what they feel about each other than their actual faith in the product.

Ben and Cam are guys on their last straw. If Crisp jeans doesn’t work out there is no chance either will do much with their lives. I’m not saying they’d be the dregs of society, but that “we’re too young to fail” mentality is starting to enter its twilight. Crisp jeans just has to work. Right?

Meanwhile Luis Guzman is a revelation. I don’t know if it’s the accent, his mannerisms or Rene’s absolute ruthless determination to sell Rasta Monsta, but I found myself laughing every time he entered frame. His dealing with the bodega owner and learning how exactly to market Rasta Monsta (hint: it’s equal parts violent threats and good old fashioned marketing) are lessons both Cam and Ben could and should learn quickly. He deals with two sleazy executives for Rasta Monsta, who look like they came right out of the Guido’s Guide to Subtlety, in exactly the way you deal with guys like that; you don’t allow them to speak.

All in all, another strong episode of How to Make it in America. Crisp jeans is moving along and Rasta Monsta is going to take over every bodega in the city.

Other thoughts:

- I always wondered what interior designer did. Turns out they “save this city 300 square feet at a time.”

- I was glad Ben’s dad didn’t turn out to be some rich guy. It’s more realistic that Ben comes from modest and loving means rather than some high-powered CEO that regrets Ben’s lack of focus in life.  (Cinemablend.com)

Aloha Rag + Thakoon Launch Party

Thakoon

cardigans2Normally, when I make my way down to Greenwich Street it’s usually because I’m driving through traffic hell en route to cross the Holland Tunnel, but now that those days are thankfully over, my only destination in that neck of the woods is to get to Aloha Rag.  A long time favorite store of mine, they have a location at 505 Greenwich Street (at Spring Street). The store is well curated with coveted brands such as Balmain, Margiela, Balenciaga, and Comme Des Garcons, to name a few.  I bought my lovely R13 jeans there that I absolutely love.

A regular customer and fan of Aloha Rag’s simple cardigans is Thakoon Panichgul, the Thai-born, Omaha-raised, design darling of Anna Wintour. Thakoon recently showed his Fall 2010 RTW collection at New York Fashion Week.  After a mention of Aloha Rag’s cardigans being a uniform for him in an interview, Aloha Rag contacted Thakoon and the rest is history.

cardigansLast night was the debut of his men’s wear collaboration with Aloha Rag of two plaid unisex cashmere cardigans. I had the pleasure of meeting Thakoon, and of course, he was sporting his current obsession, plaid. With the saying that “little is more”, Thakoon fans are left wanting more of what he has to offer to men’s wear.  Perhaps, this is a little prelude to something more to come.  We certainly hope so!

Fortunate for New Yorkers, Thakoon’s cardigans are only available at the Greenwich Street store, but you can shop for more Thakoon at Aloha Rag’s online store.

Denim Brand: A Sneak Peak at Generra’s Fall Collection

Last week, I had written about my anticipation to see the relaunch of Generra under the helm of dynamic duo Swaim and Christina Hutson at this upcoming Fashion Week.  Well, in today’s WWD, they have given an exclusive interview and peak at the collection.

Swaim and Christina Hutson

Swaim and Christina Hutson

Next Friday, the designers will have their much-anticipated comeback moment, and this time they’ll do so at the helm of a company having a hyped reboot of its own: Generra. The Hutsons’ new inspiration? A decidedly more upbeat “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

“We were attracted to the colors, the movement and how sweet and fun everything was in the movie,” says Christina, nestled into her chair at the Generra headquarters on Seventh Avenue. “Going forward, everything is going to be bright and optimistic.” She gestures to the racks of clothes around her — a preview exclusive to WWD — and they’re a rainbow of cheerful jeans, ruffled frocks and T-shirts with a pop Eighties vibe. The collection is a marked shift from those of their predecessors; Tony Melillo, who helped relaunch the popular Eighties brand in 2004, went relaxed and leisurely, while his successor Pina Ferlisi took things for a tomboyish spin. “This is definitely another take on Generra’s DNA,” says Dan Shamdasani, chief executive officer and president of parent company Public Clothing. “It’s young, vibrant and fresh.”  (WWD – Click here to read today’s full article)

Sonia Rykiel Previews H&M Lingerie Line

by ELENA BERTON

sonia-rykiel-for-hmPARIS — Sonia Rykiel has given WWD a preview of the first looks from its lingerie collaboration with H&M, which will hit stores this week.

The one-off collection marks a first for the successful series of collaborations that the Swedish fast-fashion giant has secured with high-profile fashion designers.

The 70-piece collection will be available on Saturday in 1,500 H&M stores worldwide and will go on sale at the same time at Rykiel boutiques — the first time a guest designer for H&M will do so. The French firm counts 44 boutiques worldwide, along with 52 in-store shops.

“I wanted to show that I am very proud of this collection,” Sonia Rykiel’s daughter, Nathalie, who is president and artistic director of the fashion house, told WWD. “I also wanted to entice women who love our brand, but who may be hesitant to visit our boutiques.”
