Gentlemen, now you can get Levi’s 501 jeans in exclusive washes at J. Crew!  Prices range from $98 (for the true 501’s) to $325 (for the iconic 1947 jeans).

Levi's 501 jean in worn true wash $98

Levi’s® 501® jean in worn true wash, $98.00

The jean that made denim famous by the brand that made jeans legendary. This is Levi’s® classic 501® jean—the same one that first debuted over 100 years ago—in ringspun cotton denim from the world-famous Cone Denim®. Handsanded to create an authentic broken-in look and feel and finished with a damaged indigo wash that’s exclusive to J. Crew.

Levi's 1947 501 Brain Dead jean $325

Levi’s® 1947 501® Brain Dead jean, $325.00

The definitive five-pocket jean and the quintessential 501®, the 1947 jean is considered by many denim connoisseurs to have the most iconic cut and features, including a double-needle arcuate (with lemon-yellow stitching) and a selvedge edge on the inside of the coin pocket. Wartime restrictions had ended, hence the hefty 14-ounce denim, and the ‘47 model also introduced the return of the riveted watch pocket. The Brain Dead 1947 jean is made from red selvedge denim that’s hard washed and lightly scuffed for an authentic aged finish.

Denim Finds: Target + Liberty of London

When I attended Target’s first pop-up shop initiative in 2008 titled Bullseye Bodegas with featured limited edition fashion collaborations with designers Anya Hindmarch, Sigerson Morrison, Jonathan Saunders and Converse, I decided going forward that I would wait until it hit stores for a calmer shopping experience. It was sheer mayhem!

Well, who would have known that the Target + Liberty of London pop-up shop would sell out by their second day forcing them to close up shop that evening.  Oh woe is me, I never had a fighting chance to purchase the lovely Liberty of London bicycle that I so wanted.  The limited offerings are now available on-line and in participating Target stores, but buyer beware, not a whole lot left.  Oh woe is me.

Denim News: Levi’s Denim Doppelgänger

Would you pay $758 for a pair of replicated vintage Levi’s jeans reincarnated by another brand?  The Japanese label Evisu sure thinks so.  A limited edition range under the Evisu Private Stock label, pays homage to three original vintage styles by Levi’s.  The three styles to be sold mirror the images of Levi’s 1944 501 jeans (500 pairs at $358 each), the 1890 “Nevada” jeans (250 pairs at $558 each), and the 1917 “Campbell” jeans (100 pairs at $758).

Each pair of jeans is packaged in an elaborate wooden box and will be available at select specialty stores in August, including Barneys New York, American Rag, Fred Segal, Atrium and evisu.com.

“The Private Stock collection is a showcase for Evisu to retell the story of some of denim history’s most iconic jeans,” said Scott Morrison, chief executive officer of Evisu. “We’re not remaking a Levi’s jean, nor are we claiming that this is a Levi’s jean. We’re merely taking inspiration from our past and paying homage to one of the oldest, or historically relevant, jeans in existence, which in this case happens to have been an amazing pair of Levi’s. Denim has a wonderful story to tell and as denim designers you can’t help but find ideas for the future by looking in the past.” (WWD)

Well, let’s see what the outcome is after Levi’s investigates the details of these “inspired” jeans.  It will either be a nod of flattery or the denim demons will have to put an end to this.

Thrillist Nation: The Lowdown on the Jean Scene

Today’s Thrillist article is about Denim Debate, a forum for fashion bloggers, tastemakers and shop owners who have volunteered to run 25 different premium brands through fierce wear and tear testing that is regularly documented.  Two brands that are mentioned are Momotaro and the Jean Shop, premium brands that I have done articles on in the past. Read the full Thrillist Nation article below.

New products endure rigorous testing to determine durability: for instance, the USDOT slams crash test dummies into walls, until they leave to form one-hit-wonder folk-rock bands. Check out some dudes figurin’ how your new jeans’ll hold up: Denim Debate.

Thrillist - Denim Debate

Providing comprehensive wearability/break-in/durability reports on high-end jeans, DD’s a forum of fashion bloggers, tastemakers, and shop owners who’ve each volunteered to run one of 25 different premium brands’ pairs through the ringer for an entire year and regularly document how they’re holding up (hopefully smartly, by insisting on unmarked, non-consecutive bills, and no dye packs). Each contributor gets his own page to submit updates throughout the annum, complete with background on both himself (job descrip, personal style, body type, etc) and his test brand, including detailed specs on everything from materials, to cut & style, to the type of buttons used; there’s also a photo section forvisual evidence of wear & tear, since sometimes it’s tough to use words to describe how things’ve aged — to wit, try explaining Mickey Rourke’s face. Just try it. Although updates’re fairly limited as the endeavor’s just begun, there’s already action like James Fox of blog 10engines, who after 3 weeks noticed his Jean Shops were “just starting to soften, and basically have no discernible creasing or wear to show”, and Ryan Huber of Context Clothing, wearing Momotaro Vintage Label, who acknowledges “the indigo rubs off on my hands everyday”, though he conveniently fails to acknowledge the reason for all the rubbing.

If you’re all about getting over-involved, DD’s open to feedback and submissions from readers on their experience with particular brands, although you couldn’t quite explain why those JNCOs really weeeerrrre coooool. Mmm mmm mmm mmm…

Paris68 – A Modern Cape Crusader

pic

Paris68, a new women’s label created by Marcella Lindeberg, one-half of the married design consultants to William Rast (husband is Johan Lindeberg of J. Lindeberg), debuted her high-end women’s wear collection during New York fashion week.  In the audience were Justin Timberlake with girlfriend Jessica Biel in full support along with fashion powerhouses Carin Roitfeld, Nina Garcia, Terry Richardson and Jefferson Hack.

Paris68 was conceived in her studio in Soho, New York, and produced exclusively in Florence. The 30 piece collection exudes a bold modern woman reflecting Marcella’s personal style of rockstar glam and her journeys in life.  Metallic materials are incorporated onto the dresses, powdery suede materials to provide a dusty feel, mohair was chosen as a preeminent fabric to add a dishevelled contrast to the firmer leather and metallic elements in the form of intricate embroideries and embellishments.

outfit1outfit2outfit3

The result, Paris68 reshapes the female silhouette with a range of capes, sartorial jackets, body-con dresses (fiercely pushing the hem line limit), leggings/skirt combinations and the application of textural leather variations on evening dresses. Definitely a label to watch out for.

With a strong background in the denim world with J. Lindeberg’s denim line and creative design input with William Rast, I would not be surprised if Marchella adds denim into her collection in the future. But in the meantime, we’re anxiously waiting to see where her line can be purchased. I can see myself wearing her leggings/skirt combination and a studded denim vest as a staple for next fall.

Behind the Scenes at Geren Ford’s Fall 2010 Lookbook Shoot

Geren Ford Fall 2010 Lookbook‘Swonderful.  ‘Smarvelous.  Geren Ford’s fall 2010 collection channels a bygone era in the fluttery dresses and smart-yet-dramatic Flash Gordon-esque jackets.  And, maybe I’ve got too much of her on the brain, but don’t the featured looks all seem too Alexa Chung-inspired to you?  If you’re an AC follower, then you know she likes the vintage looks.

Every dress piece is cut with a looser fit in mind, somewhat reminiscent of how a Flapper should be rockin’ it. It’s less body-con, but still flattering for all the young things who want to kick up a heel.

Geren Ford Fall 2010 Lookbook 6

As for the drop-crotchy harem pants, all it needs is for a model to rock a diva turban.  Norma Desmond, are you ready for your close-up?  The ghosts of Jean Harlow, Kate Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich are trapped in this collection, and I’d feel honored to catwalk in their shoes!  I can’t decide whether the looks are just old Hollywood prosperity bubble or pre-Dust Bowl.

Geren Ford Fall 2010 Lookbook 4Geren Ford Fall 2010 Lookbook 3

And for the denim looks, nothing too new here, but nonetheless tasteful and impeccably stylish.  I’m really digging on the riding-pant style patches in the photo at left.
