It’s the last day to submit your video for a chance to win FREE REPAIRS for your favorite jeans! The terms are simple: shoot a quick video telling us what your favorite jeans need to be perfect again – rips, holes, fraying, missing buttons, too big, too small, pocket falling off — whatever your baby blues require, we can fix it. Then, during the first week of August, we will announce a winner (best video, lots of pizzazz, most helpless-seeming pair of jeans), and that person will receive completely free repairs! Plus, all runners-up will have their videos featured here and on our Facebook page. So fire up your cameras, grab your most desperate denim, and tell us what’s wrong. Then, simply upload the video in a reply here or in a Facebook message to us. You’ve got nothing to lose and so much to gain! Good luck!

Remember Paper Denim & Cloth? We do, and they’re back as a ready-to-wear line via an innovative Instagram campaign called The InstaShoot. Instagramers can view behind the scenes images from the Spring-Summer 2013 lookbook, with a sneak preview of a few looks. Paper Denim first launched in ’99 with a look book of Polaroids shot by the co-founder Alex Gilbert. The brand is being re-introduced in a similar fashion, using the modern version, Instagram. Also, Chantel Valentene (of Resin Denim fame) is now Creative Director. We’re looking forward to seeing more from the Paper Denim reboot!

So you’ve got a gorgeous new pair of cut-off shorts (or maybe you hacked them off yourself, or used our expert denim cut-off service) but they’re just not quite distressed enough for you? There are several easy ways you can make your brand new shorts look extremely well-worn, from physical abuse to bleach and beyond. Check out a few of our favorites below.
1. Sandpaper, scissors & razors. Tools like scissors, X-Acto knives, sandpaper, cheese graters, and other potentially abrasive objects are amazing tools for making your jeans look vintage. When using these items, be sure to slip a piece of cardboard or a protective layer inside the pocket and the actual jean, so you are only distressing one surface as a time.
Distress where it’s natural! You’ll see natural wear and tear in places like pocket tops, hems, and anywhere whiskers form (usually around the crotch and the top of the thigh). We recommend starting out by cutting some light slashes, and then sanding and tearing at the fibers surrounding the cut/hem/etc.
How far you go with this is entirely up to you.
2. Bleach & dye.
Another great way to achieve a vintage look is to include a few inconspicuous splatters of bleach, or use a desaturated dye in colors like peach, brown, or even pale yellow. You can check out our bleaching tutorial here. Fabric dye instructions range from product to product, but you’ll get better results if the fibers are 100% cotton.
3. Let the elements do the work.
This is probably one of our favorites. It takes time and patience, and also willingness to accept whatever random things may happen to your jeans. Tie them to your fire escape, pin them to your roof, hang them out your window, or find some other place where they can be stationary in the elements of nature. Running water, summer storms, intense wind, and even wild animals will all contribute to the worn in look of your denim.
Overall tips:
+ Distress jeans that are 100% cotton sans-stretch fibers, or else you risk some major shape change after you’ve made your scissor holes & razor marks.
+ Get creative! Cut a slash in the thigh of your shorts and pull the pocket through, or cut out a design in the back pocket and reinforce with stitching. The possibilities are endless.
+ Safety first! Always use the proper precautions when using power tools, chemical dyes, etc. Read the warnings on all packages and wear goggles/gloves if necessary.

Recently, Denim Therapy covered the debut of Guerilla24, a selvage denim brand from Hong Kong. We decided to review the Sniper straight leg jean in raw selvage ($300) by Guerilla24, and Seattle photographer and style blogger John Bell was happy to help us out with this request. Since this was John’s first foray into the selvage denim territory, he knew it would be an exciting adventure in testing out a new fashion label.
They felt really solid and well put together. A tough pair of jeans. The stitching looks great, the indigo color was awesome and I liked the Guerilla24 leather patch label on the back pocket—nice touch.
Where/when would you wear these?
I would wear them out on a normal day with a t-shirt and some Sperry Top-siders; or, I would pair them with a button down and a blazer with some classy wingtip shoes.
How’s the fit?
The fit is great! The size 30 waist was just right and following down to the bottom, the pants have that smooth, tailored look on me, even though they are slightly looser on the thigh. Sitting down and bending over, the pants move with me so I’m not uncomfortable.
Go to Guerilla24 online to shop all the styles.
