As the adoring world style stalks Alexa Chung, my obsession with her, as a style icon, only intensifies, as I can’t be there in New York. However, my Denim Therapy colleagues are, and I only hope they can bump into her at some point. Here’s a sneak peek at her denim collection for Madewell. The jury is still out for me. Maybe these denim overalls and shorts just look better on Alexa.
The best part of Day 5 was not NY classic Donna Karan, or Halston (even if Marios Schwab’s vision was incredible and took the house back to its heyday). Surprisingly enough, Madewell by Alexa Chung at The Bowery Hotel won me over. Waitresses offered Old Fashioned cocktails from silver trays as Tennessee Thomas, drummer from The Like, played ??™60s tunes on the decks. Pixie Geldof was modelling one of the Madewell by Chung ensembles ??” a sheer black blouse with velvet polka-dots worm underneath a denim overall minidress, chatting and texting while on the job. Chung told me she designed this British-inspired collection for her “girl-mates”, Pixie Geldof and the aforementioned Tennesee among them.
???I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes, and a friend mentioned to me that I was on the inspiration board at Madewell. He introduced me to the team and the collaboration took off from there.???
It was one of the most interesting, fun and cool presentations I’ve been to this fashion week: celebs, including Kelly Osbourne, Agyness Deyn, Daisy Lowe and Kirsten Dunst, were everywhere, drinking cocktails in the romantic, old-world surrounds.
I figure it was time to revisit Shopbop’s offerings on denim, and their current sale doesn’t disappoint. A nice variety of denim brands, from AG Adriano Goldschmied and Current/Elliott, to Rag & Bone and DL 1961, Shopbop has got you covered on the coveted Boyfriend, Skinny, Legging, bootcut, shorts and rompers. I am currently eyeing the Alice + Olivia exposed front zip Denim Leggings (in black), which go for $138.60, and it’s still available in my size. Imagine that.

Not! Chicago illustration and design collective OhNo!Doom has posed the question: how will fashion change around our increasing addiction to and reliance of technology? The iBap (iGotaBigAssPocket) concept sends “a message about the future of mobile devices and its portability by combining fashion with function… humorously.”
So far, the fashion world, for the most part, has functioned independently, with some exceptions, such as the mass-marketed Nike and iPod collaboration. I wouldn’t put it past some denim designers out there to produce kangaroo-like back pockets for your jeans, or smart phone-friendly pockets that look cooler than the ones already available for some slacks. Not sure the boss upstairs at Denim Therapy would be willing to add iPad pockets for your beloved jeans. It might be denim abuse.
OhNo!Doom are a Chicago collective that combines our skills for a greater-good, like a Wu-Tang Clan made up of illustrators and designers. Pooling our resources, OhNo!Doom uses its weight and influence to give its memberartists increased exposure and opportunities. In addition to the collective??™s designer toy line, OhNo!Doom also operates a gallery space to showcase its members work as well as other artists, proving that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Have you heard of Gridlock Denim? Launched in 2009, Gridlock is a Los Angeles-based denim brand that made fashion headlines when they launched at L.A.’s Kitson boutique. It’s a neat take on the chameleon jean: your jeans change as your mood changes, via patented Interchangeable Pocket Overlays. “All it takes is a couple of quick zips, buttons or snaps.” You can alternate your back pocket design without having to take them off, although it might get tricky depending on how tight you wear them. Television celebs like AnnaLynne McCord (“90210”) have been seen wearing them.
The jeans offered are the tried and true basics: straight leg, boot cut and a couple of skinny and cigarette styles. Back pocket shapes and designs vary. You can purchase additional sets of back pockets for about $30 at Gridlock Denim‘s own Web site.
If you’re still not sure about spending lots of money on jeans you just heard about, The Sample Sale is offering them up for a mere $59. So, you can get your feet wet and not totally feel buyer’s remorse. Shop soon: sale ends in just over a day.

I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before, but, why haven’t car companies spun off a line of designer jeans? Haven’t you walked into your dealership for your usual maintenance appointments, and noticed the display of branded merch? I suppose making a pair of jeans is a whole other game, but, why the heck not?
Like a vehicle purchase, we look for the same things: sleek design, functionality, handling, and plenty of leg room. Not sure there’s one pair of jeans that has it all yet, but here are some good ones to check out:
Handling. And I mean how soft it feels.
Handling. Feels great around the waist and comfy, too.
Plenty of leg room at 36" inseam.
More room in the thigh and a straight leg to stay slim and elongated.

Denim is the star once again in the March issue of Vogue UK. Alexa Chung graces the cover in a cool tomboy look of denim with a splash of glam saying: “My newfound appetite for all things dungaree is a worry.”
So, when the winter blues set in and your wardrobe needs a little perking up, add some high-voltage glam with some sparkling denim. Whether it’s crystals, studs or a metallic finish, try something with some added shimmer. Who said diamonds are a girl’s only bestfriend?

With all the dizzying array of denim styles out there, it’s always nice to find a denim brand that goes further to bring you expert tailoring and advanced textile technology. Marc Allison Jeans, (formerly Marc Alan Jeans) a semi-newbie to the premium denim mix, has decidely produced fashion’s It-Jeans with a refined flair. Take their skinny jeans, for instance. I’m serious. Take them, and try them on! They feel velvety soft and stretchy. No pinching on your hip bones and the skinny jeans I tried on conforms to the length of my legs without choking them.
I tried on the Michi Skinny in Medium Blue Indigo with abrasion (it’s still pretty dark), which are super low-rise, so ladies with a booty will look great in these. If you have less junk in the trunk, they may ride down a bit if you squat, but the waistband doesn’t pucker out. Don’t be scared off by the 32″ inseam if you normally go shorter, because they crinkle up a bit. The cut of the jean also doesn’t choke the ankles, so, even though they are skinny, legging-like jeans, they have a made-for-you look.
So, I had to find out what was the real story behind these super comfy jeans, and Marc Flashberg, President of Marc Allison Jeans, was nice enough to fill me in.
What inspires you?
My love of denim. I’ve been selling denim since the inception of the premium denim market and it became a major part of my life. Over the years, I’ve moved from selling denim to creating denim fabrics, and now actually designing my own line.
We have something different, something you can’t get any where else in the denim market. It is so inspiring to hear comments on the feel of the jean, the comfort and movability, [and] the recovery in the jean that it motivates me to continue our journey.
What bugs you about some “premium” denim jeans currently out?
It really bothers me that a woman can put on a beautiful fitting pair of jeans in the morning and then half way through the day, the fit is gone. The jean doesn’t come anywhere close to looking as good at the end of the day as they do when they are put on at the start of their day. The major reason for this is the fabric.
Unlike other premium denim, the entire Marc Allison jeans line is designed with a completely new fabric that no other brand is offering ??“ a four-way X-FIT stretch denim infused with Supima cotton, that makes for a stunningly flattering fit, extraordinary movement and comfort, with great recovery so it won’t stretch out.
Are there plans for a men’s denim line? If so, when?
We’d love to start working on a men’s denim line; however, we are focusing all our efforts on the woman’s wear market. We do believe we will be able to start designing a men’s line within the next 2 years.
Marc Allison Jeans can currently be found at select Theory stores, and other upscale boutiques in the coming months.
