Denim Desires: Geren Ford

GEREN FORD Elastic Vest in Faded Denim, available at CHOCOSHO.

GEREN FORD Elastic Vest in Faded Denim, available at CHOCOSHO.

Yes, yes, yes.  Very nice.  Geren Ford has created a vest that is helping me forget about the trashy version of denim vests — you know, the ones with the ripped-off sleeves — which are popular amongst the motorcycle gang set.  I was so afraid that all the destroyed denim hoopla going on right now would also lead to the revival of the destroyed denim jackets.  My fashion nightmares awakened the frightening memories of the mullet hair: another association with the biker gang/”My Name is Earl” overall look.  Eep!  Some parts of the 80s should just stay back in the 80s.  Anybody feel me on this one?

But, back to the present.  Geren Ford managed to create a tasteful rendition of a breezy summer-friendly denim vest.  The elastic vest is chic, elegant and sustainable through a four-hour road trip from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara.  Believe me; being cooped up inside a car for hours is no fun, but the journey is worth it when you arrive in wine country and step out in style.

NYC: Personalize Your Diesel Jeans

Diesel jeans lovers in New York City are getting an extra helping of Diesel love by the introduction of their own fancy, schmancy laser device at the Diesel Planet location on Fifth Avenue. For just $10, you can “laser-etch a name and any given date” into the waistband of your new jeans.  I suspect if you ask nicely, you might be able to get your monogram instead, because that would be so cool.  Oh, and the date?  I might suggest the date that you plan to wash your jeans for the first time.

If you haven’t been to the Diesel Planet store, you’ll also find that it’s a fun place to shop, because they’ve incorporated some high-tech solutions to helping you find your best fitting jeans.  Check it out!

WWD Denim News: APC Opens Third Hong Kong Outpost / Levi Strauss Launches Global Division

APC Opens Third Hong Kong Outpost

From WWD ISSUE 06/18/2009

APC??™s Wyndham Street store (Photo by Courtesy Photo)

HONG KONG ??” French fashion house APC has opened its third store in the heart of the Central shopping and entertainment district here.

The 500-square-foot unit on pedestrian-heavy Wyndham Street here features a contemporary blend of exposed and shabby concrete beams, pale timbers, well-lit mirrors and a rectangular black aluminum and glass facade. It was designed by architect Laurent Deroo, who also did APC??™s stores in Tokyo??™s Harajuku area and Los Angeles.

Jean Touitou, APC??™s founder and owner, flew in to attend an opening party featuring a performance by French rock band Housse de Racquet and visit his other stores in the region.

Hong Kong has hit the radar for this recent expansion, but Japan, where Touitou made his first Asian foray with APC, is no longer a focus for growth. In recent years, APC has closed some stores there and intends to focus more on Paris than Tokyo.

???There used to be about 20 stores [in Japan], but we now have about 15,??? said Touitou, sipping tea in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel here, adding that his focus is shifting to his home turf, partly because the economic environment is not conducive to doing both.

Levi Strauss Launches Global Division

by Ellen Groves

From WWD ISSUE 06/18/2009

Maurizio Donadi (Photo by Courtesy Photo)

The division will be based in Amsterdam and the firm has tapped Polo Ralph Lauren Corp.??™s Maurizio Donadi as its senior vice president, in charge of some 30 people. The team, to which further outside talent may be recruited, will develop handcrafted styles from Levi??™s archives plus premium contemporary jeans and casual clothing, using the best materials on the market, according to Armin Broger, president of Levi Strauss Europe, Middle East and North Africa.

???We wanted to offer all those who love the Levi??™s brand an opportunity to experience the highest expression of our design and craftsmanship,??? Broger told WWD. ???People today crave authenticity, honesty and simplicity in all aspects of their lives. I believe that in our industry, there is no brand with greater authenticity, truer passion or deeper expertise than Levi??™s.???

Targeting selected retailers, the first designs will hit the market in 2010 and part of the collection will be made in the U.S. The division??™s name, XX, is an abbreviation for ???extra, extra strong,??? an expression coined to refer to the quality of the denim Levi??™s used to make the world??™s first pair of jeans in 1873.

Donadi, who took up his role this week, is described by Broger as ???highly competent and absolutely passionate about denim.???

WWD: Kokosolaki to Design Diesel Black Gold

From WWD ISSUE 06/17/2009

MILAN ??” Sophia Kokosalaki is facing change.

The London-based designer will take on a lead design role in the development of Diesel??™s high-end contemporary line, Black Gold. Her title and start season will be determined shortly.

???[Kokosalaki??™s] talent is incredible. Her taste in high-end fashion is already known, but what people do not necessarily expect from her is her skill in dealing with denim and contemporary casual, the core of Diesel Black Gold. I hope this experience will give her the possibility to further affirm her place in today??™s international fashion scenario,??? said Renzo Rosso, chairman of Diesel and its holding company, Only the Brave.

At the same time, the Greek designer has acquired her namesake company from Only the Brave for an undisclosed sum.

Kokosalaki, who nearly always wears black and denim, launched her signature collection in 1999 and sold the company to Only the Brave two years ago. Under Rosso, she expanded it to include accessories and costume jewelry.
