Denim Desires: Bulga De Beber Denim Bag

BULGA Beber in Denim, available at SAVVY.

BULGA De Beber in Denim, available at SAVVY.

Can this be?  Bulga has gone denim on us?  Isn’t this handbag line known more for its leather finish and signature tassel-fringe accents?  At least for the moment, I can enjoy its more casual, slouchy and non-leather offspring, the De Beber in Denim, while it’s on sale at SAVVY. Because, once it’s gone, Bulga bags may just stick to its mainstay of leather as its base material.

WWD: Men’s Paris Preview: Q&A With Dries Van Noten

Posted THURSDAY JUNE 25, 2009

From WWD ISSUE 06/25/2009

PARIS ??” Born into a family of tailors, Dries Van Noten has been designing men??™s and women??™s wear under his own label since the mid-Eighties. WWD caught up with the Belgian designer on the eve of his spring 2010 show tonight to discuss the collection and get his views on creating apparel for men.

WWD: What is the mood of the spring collection?
Dries Van Noten: We are working on something which is very elegant and sartorial??¦and mixed to a kind of ethnic chic.

WWD: That sounds like quite an evolution from your January show. What prompted the transition?
D.V.N.: For me, it??™s not a huge shift, going from one thing to another. It has more to do with the fact that I wanted to find another approach to ethnic, making it very smart, elegant and sartorial. Immediately it gives it a different feel. Almost all the fabrics are handmade, handwoven and hand-printed. We are also using some very high-technological fabrics, as well as traditional English wool.

April 77 Throws Paris Fashion Week Party

Gosh I wish I were in Paris right now, having the time of my life with all the stylish people!  It must be a feast for the eyes to see Parisians and fashionphiles strutting their stuff on and off the runway.  Denim and record label April 77 didn’t miss a beat when they decided to throw their own party in honor of Paris Fashion Week.  I wonder if we’ll see their signature melancholy-stoic models — who look like they went to the Byzantine-Gustav Klimt school of modelling — hanging around the party, looking like they don’t care about how cool they are to be in the company of April 77.

Renzo Piano + Denim + Sustainability = The World’s Greenest Museum

pic2When I think of denim, I obviously picture a great fitting skinny jean or jacket . Well, how about insulation?   Renzo Piano, Italian maestro of architecture, designed the new California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Since the opening in Fall 2008, it has proven to be the vanguard of sustainability, orchestrating the perfect harmony of art, engineering and architecture.

How more befitting than to follow the history of denim in the bay area, denim was pioneered in San Francisco by Levi Strauss & Co. during the mid-1800s.  Levi Strauss donated 216,000 pairs of jeans that was used to insulate the museum.  In addition, a foundation created by Levi Strauss descendant and former company president Walter Haas and his wife, Evelyn, have underwritten the cost of the aquarium??™s Northern California Coast exhibit as well.

Wait, it doesn’t end there, the founders of Gap Inc., the Fishers, have underwritten the academy??™s new Fisher Family Center for Marine Science.

The Academy is now the largest public Platinum-rated building in the world, and also the world??™s greenest museum. The Academy earned the platinum rating (highest rating possible) for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).  It is a single structure that contains multiple venues, including an aquarium, planetarium, the natural history museum and the 4-story rain forest.  In addition, there is a new 3D theater, a lecture hall, Naturalist Center, two restaurants, an adjacent garden and aviary, a roof terrace, and an Academy store.  Everything from the facilities radiant sub-floor heating to the bike racks outside follow their commitment to sustainability.

I guess the set designers of the Teletubbies were true visionaries as well.

So, next time you scratch your head wondering how to recycle your denim, think about the vast possibilities and put them into good green use.  If you are in the bay area, it is a must see!  And wear your jeans  as a salute to the museum’s pioneering vision.

WWD News: Rosso Says…and LL Cool J at M2

Rosso Says

Renzo Rosso

Renzo Rosso

Marc Jacobs men??™s wear could make its debut on the Milan runway next season, according to Renzo Rosso, whose Staff International recently added the label to its license portfolio. ???We??™re thinking about it,??? Rosso said on the sidelines of the Dsquared show Monday. ???A name like that merits importance.??? Joining him on the front row at Dan and Dean Caten??™s camping-inspired extravaganza was Halle Berry??™s beau, model Gabriel Aubry, who said he was supporting ???fellow Canadians.???

LL Cool J at M2

FASHION MOVERS: More than 600 people filled the Meatpacking District hot spot M2 Thursday night to recognize five industry executives on the forefront of the eco-friendly fashion movement. Hosted by Fashion Delivers, the event??™s honorees included Wes Card, chief executive of Jones Apparel Group; Franke Rodriguez, brand director of I/denti/tee; Sally Fowler and Jessica Moment, co-founders of San Francisco boutique Philanthropist; Chlo?© Jo Berman, founder of Girliegirl Army, and eco-minded designer Linda Loudermilk. The altruism particularly touched LL Cool J, who hosted the event, which raised $22,000 for the charity. ???When I heard about this organization being started back in 2005 and them helping people that were suffering in Katrina and everybody that was devastated by that event, I thought it sounded like a really great thing to get involved with,??? he said. The event also drew in designer Rachel Roy, who wore a dress from her new secondary line Rachel Rachel Roy, which is slated to launch with a fall collection in August.

Denim Stylefinder: Jacket Required

CURRENT/ELLIOTT The Biker Jacket in Sundrenched Chambray.

CURRENT/ELLIOTT The Biker Jacket in Sundrenched Chambray.

I have been reinspired by this summer’s interpretations of smart denim jackets that can go with just about anything.  My only fashion pairing caveat is that folks not wear actual denim jackets with matching denim jeans or shorts.  The last I checked, this blog has banned the Canadian Tuxedo.  How Justin Timberlake recovered from his Red Carpet faux pas — back in the Britney days — to become the Denimisto that he is today with the popular William Rast denim label, is nothing short of an ironic miracle.

BBLESSING Chambray Jacket, available online at BBLESSING.

BBLESSING Light Blue Chambray Jacket, available online at BBLESSING.

Check out these denim and chambray jackets!  It’s a mix of classic, never out of style, to retro interpretations that boldly go where few have gone.  A word of caution:

Don’t even think about walking into a Michelin-starred, jacket-required restaurant with these babies.  They probably don’t count as “proper attire.”

show them off at lunchy places, nightspots and other hip and swanky establishments that allow you to express your fashion-forward side.

throw your denim-inspired  jackets over your favorite summer fashion finds.
