Trend Report: Light-Wash Denim

Ah, light-wash denim, another trend that hits this spring/summer season.  Actually, it’s not so much a trend than what comes naturally when the weather heats up.  If you recall, light-washed, bleached out jeans were a hit last summer.  Folks just want to lighten up to beat the heat.  Unlike last year’s affinity towards bell-bottoms and flare jeans, this summer, no particular denim cut in a light wash has stuck out so far.

From Who What Wear Daily:

Source: Who What Wear Daily.

In the solar system of fashion trends, if hemlines and silhouettes act like Jupiter and Saturn, denim is more like Mercury. To explain our odd astronomy reference, we simply mean that while the former orbits around the sun??”er, progresses??”at a stately pace, jean styles move super swiftly. Happily, you don’t have to understand Kepler’s laws of planetary motion to appreciate the current light-wash denim craze. Just observe how famous stylesetters like Rihanna and Rachel Zoe are wearing these pale pairs and comprehension shall be yours!

Though fashionable celebrities are often responsible for directing denim fads (cough: boyfriend jeans), today’s Trend Report has a great deal of runway support as well. Balmain created a few notoriously expensive options, which have received loads of press, but the light-wash pieces shown by brands like Diesel and William Rast are equally on-trend and not as silly-expensive. At the Diesel Black Gold show, a paint-on-denim pair was styled with sandals, a Muslin Tux Shirt ($350, 212.625.1555), and a simple gray Bonis Blazer ($400), while at William Rast, pale jeans appeared with a tucked-in chambray shirt and an equally bleached-out vest. Diesel created the aforementioned style solely for the runway collection, but try their Wenga Jeans ($300, 212.755.3555) for a similar effect. If you prefer the William Rast look, just pick up the brand’s Sadie Jeans ($220) in Snowstorm and couple it with a Chambray Western Shirt ($113).

Matthew Williamson Does Men’s Wear

When I think of Matthew Williamson, I can smell the fragrances of Jasmine, Ylang Ylang and Mimosa, see bursts of vibrant colors, the touch of a peacock feather and Talitha Getty lounging pool side at her Morrocan palace being fanned whilst being fed exotic fruits in her fabulous hedonistic world.  If Anna Sui is the Queen of bohemian chic, Williamson is the King.

I remember a year ago or was it two?  Time has a way of passing you by so quickly. I spotted Williamson checking out vacant store-front buildings on W.14th street in the meat packing district.  He has since opened up his New York flagship store on that very same street filled with a mesmerizing display of his collection of iconic flowy dresses and accessories.

Williamson is testing the waters with a men’s wear collection for H&M, injecting his DNA of playful colors and relaxed sensibility with a tad touch of edgy bad-boy to keep you wanting more. Eventhough it’s part of the men’s line, I will totally rock that studded jacket!  I love the colorful jeans, especially the bermuda cut-off jeans. My prediction is that his line will fly out of the stores instantly!  In stores tomorrow, May 14th!!

For a full coverage of Matthew Williamson on his collaboration with H&M, read WWD’s story below.

Williamson Tests Men’s at H&M

photo1Matthew Williamson hopes to launch a men??™s collection under his signature label if all goes well with his H&M men??™s initiative.

The British designer??™s first men??™s collection lands Thursday in 1,600 H&M stores. The retailer broached the idea with him in June, he said.

???They proposed to me to do a men??™s line that would complement the women??™s, and I thought I would try it because I haven??™t ever done men??™s,??? he said. ???I thought it would be interesting to design clothes that I can actually wear for a change. And also, we were thinking of doing a men??™s line in the main collection eventually, so this will be a good test for that.???

With his H&M collection, Williamson said he aimed to translate his women??™s aesthetic for men.

???I hope it has the same relaxed bohemian spirit,??? he said. ???In men??™s, you are more restricted in the fabrics you can use. I did not want to be too formal or rigid, nor too extreme, or costume. It treads a fine line, avoiding that, but evoking the same spirit as the women??™s wear.???

The Liquor Store: J. Crew’s First Men’s Store

J. Crew Men’s Store Opens in SoHo

Location, location, location.

j-crew2J. Crew will open its third men??™s-only store today at 484 Broadway in Manhattan, sandwiched between the new Topshop/Topman and the company??™s Madewell women??™s concept.

The 3,406-square-foot men??™s store is in a 19th-century building in SoHo and features a curated and edited assortment of J. Crew standards, limited edition product and vintage pieces. It also houses the company??™s first Suit Shop space dedicated to tailored clothing.

???As we started to develop our men??™s business from a design, edited and curated point of view, we felt we couldn??™t effectively articulate the assortment in our normal J. Crew store,??? said Millard ???Mickey??? Drexler, chief executive officer. ???We saw an opportunity in the marketplace for a store that is dedicated to men only, where a man would see it as his world and he didn??™t have to share it with women??™s or Crewcuts [the company??™s children??™s wear concept].???

As a result, the company removed men??™s from the 2,600 square feet that it occupied on the lower level of the 13,000-square-foot J. Crew store on Prince Street, a few blocks north, to give men??™s its own home. The decision also allowed the retailer to expand its women??™s collection and Crewcuts selection on Prince Street, Drexler said.

Good Society: Designer Jeans With a Conscience

I think I have become obsessed with Good Society, the “new” eco-denim line launched in the fall of 2007 by Sling and Stones creator, Aiden Dinh.  Good Society is the cheaper — but no less stylish — denim line.  I have seen other uber hip denim labels spin off a Green collection, but it’s hard to find a really good Green jean that was conceived to be not only eco-friendly and Fair Trade, but philanthropic from the start.  Believe it or not, not everyone believes in the “hype” of Green jeans.  Purists will sift through each “Eco” brand and say, well, many jeans are only 98% organic because the 2% stretch part is not.  I say, big deal.   Good Society jeans claims to be 100% organic denim that is a “forward thinking collection that is fully sustainable ??“ both ecologically and socially.  If you’re doing what you can to make sure you also don’t exploit garment workers and you donate 10% of profits to charities in third world countries, then that’s something.  That’s what Good Society is about.

Why am I still talking about Green jeans, when Earth Day is over?  In this case, it doesn’t matter what the occasion.  A fantastic pair of jeans from concept to design is just that.  You can’t stop thinking about it and you can’t stop talking about it.

Learn more about GOOD SOCIETY.

Available at ENVI and other carefully selected retailers.

While I am still thinking about what to get mom for Mother’s Day, time is a tick-tocking away.  Dare I spend the extra money for Express Shipping of the usual flowers in a vase, or perhaps a pre-packaged cosmetic gift?  I think mom would like to get a spa certificate, and perhaps a pair of trusty, wow-momma jeans.  Granted, my mom is both conservative (rarely wears shorts or short skirts) and flamboyant (think lots of loud florals) in her dress code.  And, yes, it can be tricky when shopping for other people.  Then again, if you’re the mom, you can always drop major hints to your loved ones with a few of these last-minute babies that you can order online and simply pick up at your local Nordstrom store!

Hail to the Queen of Bohemian Chic!

Anna Sui SS09

Anna Sui SS09

Anna Sui SS09

Anna Sui SS09

I feel like finding my inner Cher, circa 1969, putting on a big furry Mongolian lambs wool coat with go-go boots and jumping up and down on my bed in sheer delight!  Anna Sui, the Queen of Bohemian Chic, will be creating a line for Target!

I have been a devoted fan of Anna Sui, a former CFDA winner, since the early 90s.   Sui is known for her whimsical mixture of high-end classics infused with bohemian and vintage influences, resulting in a hip downtown style that is flattering on every woman who is playful and confident.  The second designer to participate in Target’s Designer Collaborations series, Alexander McQueen being the first.  Anna Sui will surely deliver an exciting collection, due to release on October 17th.  So, mark your calendars!  I would love to see Azzedine Alaia be the next one!

For more in-depth coverage, read today’s WWD article below.

Target Signs Designer Anna Sui

Target Corp. is hoping a dash of Anna Sui??™s downtown New York style will lure thrifty consumers.

As the discount retailer pushes to bring designer names to the masses, Sui will be the second participant in Target??™s Designer Collaborations series.

Bowing on Sept. 13 on and in about 250 select stores across the U.S., Anna Sui for Target will be available through Oct. 17.

The Designer Collaborations program features more established talents ??” Alexander McQueen was the inaugural designer ??” than the up-and-comers of Target??™s Go International.

The new program also has an unusual conceit: designers draw inspiration from a collaborative partner, muse or creative element. Sui chose the four main female characters on the CW??™s hit show ???Gossip Girl.???

Sui, this year??™s winner of the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, has estimated annual sales of $20 million at wholesale, 14 global fragrance and cosmetics licenses and a 42-store franchise in China, Japan, Taiwan and Kuwait.

???I have always been a fan of designer partnerships with mass retailers,??? Sui told WWD exclusively. ???I think it is a great way to bring fashion to everyone. I love Go International and was intrigued with Target??™s new take on designer partnerships. It??™s a fresh approach. I was able to select a muse or source of creative inspiration to focus the collection around. It is an exciting challenge to try and interpret my aesthetic into a mass-produced product with a specific inspirational source as the focus.???

Denim Technology: Where’s The Insect Repellent Designer Jeans?

Ex Officio's "Buzz Off" insect repellent jeans.

EX OFFICIO's "Buzz Off" insect repellent jeans, available at SIERRA TRADING POST.

With summer just ahead of us, I started to wonder how I would dress to beat the heat without having to look like a tourist in my own home town — clad in a tank top, shorts, comfy walking shoes and a hands-free belt bag.  Chances are, I would love to wear shorts, skirts and capris more often, particularly of the designer denim variety.  But the hypochondriac in me wonders how I’m going to protect myself from Malaria, West Nile or any scary bug-related issue.  Believe me, I’ve worn the extra heavy weight denim and thick socks, and still have been bitten by bugs.  It doesn’t work.  Anybody feel me on this?

Then I found out that there are indeed insect-repellent jeans and clothing, brought you us by companies such as L.L. Bean and the lesser known Ex Officio label, which has a line of “Buzz Off” jeans and travel related apparel.  From the looks of it, the men’s jeans are still in abundance, but not the women’s version.  And, no, they aren’t the fancy designer jeans you’d love to have, which begs the question: why aren’t popular denim labels adding an insect-repellent denim line?  Is it just not cool?  Is it too costly?  Is there not a market for this?  In this day and age, people are really looking for value in everything they purchase.  I suspect consumers don’t expect any less in their high-end, premium jeans buys.

Even if companies put out a limited edition bug-repellent designer denim line for the height of bug season, heck, I’d buy a couple of pairs.  Imagine if Paige Premium, 7 for All Mankind or even denim friendly clothing chain Madewell, added a “bugs off” denim line?  According to the read on the insect-repellent technology involved, the microencapsulated Permethrin, has been in the market for years, and is safe for children and even pregnant women.  It doesn’t have an odor, passes EPA standards, and it’ll last for at least 70 launderings.

Since everybody has focused on how jeans will be designed, aesthetically, what about more jeans that protect us from the elements?  Wouldn’t that be the perfect jean?  You hear that denim designers?  I want my sexy, rockin’, anti-bug jeans!
