J Brand Jeans’ Love Story Unfolds.

Picture_16

Love Story (1970) is one of the most popular tearjerkers of all time.

Inspired by Ali MacGraw, the young, fresh-faced Love Story star, J Brand Love Story jeans are popular with today’s celebs —  Penelope Cruz, Paris Hilton, Katherine Heigl, Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss, Claudia Schiffer and Rachel Bilson (whose style channels retro MacGraw) are fans.

The jeans, which start fitted against the leg and flare into a tasteful modern bell leg, come in all shades.  From jet black to bleached pale, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”  Get the Love Story Look:

Ask a Denim Diva: Carpenter Jeans.

Oi!

I’ve been lookin’ and lookin’ for these jeans.  Seems like the current trend is less function/more hug.  I can appreciate a little hug, but those skinny jeans are a big no no.

What I’m looking for is a decent, designer-style pair of carpenter jeans.  Nautica Jeans Co. is the last company I saw with a good pair, but their site went under.  Best thing I can find is either Levi’s or Lee’s, both of which are hard as rocks and aren’t too great when it comes to sizing.

Slightly stressed, comfortable pair of carpenter jeans. Can ya help me out?

Lucky_prank_2
Hello, Friend:

Carpenter jeans, eh?  My friend, unless you’re looking for the usual Wrangler, Carhartt, Lee, Levi’s or Gap labels, it’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack these days.

The first company that comes to mind that has great vintage feeling denim is Lucky Brand.  They don’t have any carpenter jeans in their current line, but I did manage to locate Lucky Brand’s Prank Carpenter Jeans at Buckle, a site that has an array of more relaxed fitting jeans.

Another pair that you can check out is Cinch Jeans at Sheplers.  Might I entice you to try some modern versions without the traditional carpenter side loop?  Take a look at Diesel’s Braddo Jeans, can be found at Yoox.  The denim has a more worn in feel, the fit is relaxed and the look is much more updated and stylish!

Good luck!

Kid Rocks!

For all you mom’s out there, admit it.

Part of the fun of having a little golden delicious is seeing how damn cute you can dress your tot.  When I first saw the mini-version of True Religion’s Joey jeans for toddlers,  I gasped with delight and quickly started a little mini collection of jeans for my son.

Whether you want to keep it on the cheap or splurge, there are great jeans that cross the spectrum.   And I’m happy to share my finds with you every week, so check in to find out the brands that will keep your little munchkin stylin’!

True Religion Joey Big T Jeans. These jeans are so freakin’ adorable!  Jasper’s jeans are paired with a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt by Trunk Ltd.  Both jeans and t-shirt can be found at Milkshop.  For the Creative Recreation Cesario hi-tops, go online to find retailers.

H&M Skinny Jeans H&M Jeans

H&M Skinny Jeans with an attached chain with wallet.  Jasper’s wallet was removed because he couldn’t keep it in his back pocket, but the chain still works for that “don’t mess wit me” look.  His Andy Warhol t-shirt is no longer available at BabyBird, but check out the store for other great kids items.  Jasper also has a large hat collection and the newest addition is this Small Paul Bogart Skurvy Fedora available at Baby Bazaar and his favorite Converse All Stars available online at Converse.

Denim for the Baby Daddy: Loomstate Jeans and H&M Denim.

Handm_denim_closeup1

Genius.  I saw these men’s dark denim jeans from an H&M store recently.  The stitching creates extra room around the knees so the man can more easily bend down and clean up spilled milk, thrown spaghetti, toys and the baby, of course.  Available at H&M stores.

Picture_18_2 Loomstate Mission Jean. Available online at greenloop.

And since we’re on the topic of spilled milk, don’t cry if this Loomstate Mission Jean gets dirty.  The jeans come in Channel, a dark, “dirty,” striated wash that’s stylish and rugged enough to take on baby’s messy mishaps.

Picture_20 Loomstate Prophecy Organic Cotton Jeans.

For the daddy who is conscientious about the environment and what can potentially touch his child’s sensitive skin, Loomstate Prophecy Organic Cotton Jeans is soft and slightly stretchy for comfort — they also keep daddy looking rock ‘n’ roll for an evening out.

Mommy will be impressed with daddy’s ability to juggle looking hot in these daddy-friendly jeans as he blocks the Cheerios being lobbed at him by the future Major Leaguer.

Denim Insider: Denim Chainstitching by Self Edge

Picture_9_2

Denim connoisseurs, eat your hearts out.  I recently discovered San Francisco-based Self Edge, a way cool company that goes to great lengths “to find the world’s finest denim.”  What stopped me in my tracks was the unique service offered to its clientele: denim chainstitching to finish off your denim jean hems.  Vintage craftsmanship on modern designer jeans, what a concept!

Picture_8_2

“We found a real vintage [1950s] Union
Special chainstitching machine and are hemming the jeans exactly like how they used to
be hemmed and SHOULD be hemmed.  With a chainstitch, your hem will form a
beautiful roping effect after time due to the opposite pull of denim
during washing/shrinking,” says company Co-Principal, Kiya Babzani.

Unionspecial1_3

Union Special Chainstitching Machine

“We
started to offer chainstitching because our ultimate goal is to bring a
truly vintage denim experience to our clients, and there is no reason
to take a pair of jeans with the beauty of their attention to detail
from the companies in Japan and restitch the hem with a normal top
stitch like done across the country.”

If it isn’t already evident in the denim chainstitching service, Self Edge is a company that prides itself in the attention paid to details in the sourcing, manufacturing and production of their denim lines.  Are the jeans made of all-American denim?  Japanese Selvedge?  Made of cotton handpicked in Zimbabwe?  Are these 1940s/1950s-inspired
jeans?  And if you’re into it, how about some 24kt gold-plated rivets (check out the Sling & Stones)?

And you can see this love in the lines that Self Edge carries.  Self Edge stores carry premium jeans and
accessories from all over the world, including Dry Bones, Flat Head,
Mister Freedom, Nudie Jeans, Self Edge, Skull Jeans by an Alchemist,
Sling & Stones, Imperial Denim and Sugar Cane Denim.  With a walk-in store in San Francisco and online, your craving for retro modern denim and demand for fanatic attention to detail is sure to be satisfied. Check out Self Edge’s jeans here.

Go on.  Splurge on the details. Get your jeans chainstitched at Self Edge.  Chainstitching starts at $15 per pair, and is available in-store or online.  And if you live close enough to walk in, chainstitching comes free with every purchase.

Denim Discovery: Denims from Gull Cottage

Picture_10

Whoa baby.  See that thing on my back?  Yep.  It’s a dragon; and, I’m big and I’m bad.

Maybe that’s not what you would actually say out loud, but you’ll definitely feel cool in Denims from Gull Cottage’s selection of dragon denim jackets.  You might be looking for these dragon designed denim jackets at L.A.’s Kitson retail store, but nope, it’s found “among the rollings hills and bubbling streams of New Jersey, midst horse farms and the historic villages of Hopewell and Ringoes, nestled under tall trees. Gull Cottage is the home of Paul, Soni, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.”  Yipes.

Gull Cottage specializes in custom designed denim jean jackets for the entire family.  They can pretty much put anything on denim jackets, including company logos and pictures of family pets.  Go to www.denimsfromgullcottage.com to see a selection of their pre-designed denim jackets.
